The area where (I think) she lives was hit hard. As soon as I saw it in the news, I came here to check for her. Glad to hear she is all right.
For the record, I live in South Jersey.
Sussex County, NJ checking in from Stroudsburg, PA (Holiday Inn Express). We absolutely, positively needed the internet for work projects, and the “hygiene break” didn’t hurt, either.
We lost power at 5:00 p.m. Monday. Our son called to inform us that power was restored at 3:30 p.m. today.
Our town was smacked as severely as any other in our neck of the woods. Many, many old trees will be next year’s firewood. As a result, about 95% of the town was without electricity.
I am amazed that JCP&L was able to get things back in order so quickly. They did a great job, and we are grateful for their efforts.
We’re checking out of the hotel, and going home in about an hour.
I know your area well; we used to have rental property back up the road in Browns Mills (east of Mount Holly, southe of Ft Dix) but when in the area for the weekend, we sometimes would do some shopping at the “Moorestown Mall” (Sears, etc).
Glad to hear you guys are O.K.
I’m curious how the Browns Mills area fared. I’m guessing in as much as the storm did not dump a lot of rain, they did O.K., even though it’s always very high water tables there (dig down three feet anywhere and you hit water).

my Liberal neighnbors and I have nothing to complain about - no storm issues at all, yet some of them are complaining the govt authorities and utilities are not doing enough

Wow that is pretty fast recovery. I think our local (Conn) power companies suck at restoring power, had 630K w/o power the day of the storm and still have 345K w/o power.
And we weren’t hit nearly as bad as your part of the coast.
Power is not yet restored but around here people seem to be ignoring it pretty well.

Last spring's storm caused far more damage for her place, about a week without electricity, intermittent outages of even their land lines and months of cleanup in the surrounding area that still isn't finished. And it was never declared a disaster so no FedMob help was secured.

I recently heard a report that if your power is off more than 24 hours you should throw you freezer stuff away.

Some things were frozen solid, some more on the slushy side with ice crystals still present, nothing all the way thawed or above 32 deg F.
I don’t think any bacteria started growing in, say, the 6-12 hours it was in that state.
I’d rather go by observation and judgment than some authority’s blanket rule for people who lack one or the other.
If we were away when the power came back on, I wouldn’t know how warm things had gotten in there for how long and in that case, I would have had to throw things away. That’s why some people stand a popsicle upright in the freezer in their vacation home - if the the popsicle has melted and refrozen in the bottom of the wrapper then it’s gotten warm in there - cheap sensor.
That’s what I know.
So there’s high ground areas in south Jersey?
In my area, too, there have been other storms that have caused far more damage. We were surprised that the electricity was out for only a few hours this time; a typical storm knocks it out for much longer and causes more damage. It looks like this superstorm hit Atlantic City and then went northward, with North Jersey and NY bearing the brunt of it.
Northern Virginia here. We missed the bad part. Just rain and wind.
Hundreds of utility trucks from TX-- and I'm sure from all over the country --were on their way there as the storm was going ashore.
That's what they do. But they can't get to where they need to be until the roads are cleared. Once that happens it moves pretty fast.
When we lost electricity for three weeks after Rita all the highlines had been knocked down and had to be repaired--approx 70 miles of it-- as well as the local lines brought down by trees.
Areas were set up with tents to feed the utility workers who work sun up 'til sun down. They parked in a field...hundreds of trucks...where they were fed. I guess they slept in their trucks. All hotels were full or closed.
It's really remarkable how fast it goes. These are men from all over the country who aren't familiar at all with where they are working. IMO, they are the heros!
We’re lucky enough to be living near what is reportedly the highest point in South Jersey.

I'm in MA - CT Border, nothing to report here from the storm, thank goodness, but last year during the October snowstorm we lost all our food (left it in the fridge/freezer to dump it right before trash pick-up)...when the power finally came back on everything looked fine and dandy in the Freezer - hated to throw out all that pretty frozen food....

Hi Kathy,I updated you and the Hurricane thread.My husband was permitted in Ocean City today.On our part of the Island we got about 3 feet of storm surge under the house.We are on pile lings so the house was not touched.We have molding off,a few shingles and and stuff on the ground was washed away.That means trash can holders,garden stuff etc.Bay did meet ocean but in our part it held up good.Our regular home did great but our neighbors have many trees down and some through houses.Where I work I just found out is not flooded and the electric is back.Where I work is a disaster area now.My daughter with 5 children 13 and under is still without power and her husband just had emergency surgery 2 hours ago.
I got the ping, but I’m in South Texas. I’m sending prayers & good thoughts for everyone affected by Sandy.
