I hate diners that try too hard for the fifties theme but just don't have the right feel..or food. Although not strictly a diner, my favorite diner was the Pantry Cafe in L.A..

The first time I had breakfast there I should have been warned by the skiploader they brought it in on...

There is a diner in Vernon Connecticut that has never served a bad meal. The only deficit they have is dessert but most people never discover this due to the size of the meals

Yes, they serve very generous portions at the Pantry Cafe. Also I was friends with one of the managers and he made sure my servings were extra heavy in the chow department. Their breakfasts are the BEST!!!

I have very fond memories of the Lincoln Diner in Gettysburg. Open 24 hours, and located just off campus, it was a great place to grab a bite to eat during those all-nighters when I was in college.

True to its moniker, it did in fact, have its origins as a railroad diner car that just got pushed to the side of the tracks during the depression.

Agreed. As much as current restaurateurs attempt to create a fifties diner, it is probably impossible to do it exactly, unless there’s one still in existence with all it’s original equipment, furnishings, etc. that can be truly copied/manufactured. Further, the food itself was different in its composition and processing. Other than cornball nostalgia, I think it’s a waste of time. They may come close, but it won’t be the same, but then again, does it even matter? The whole period after WWII thru the mid-60s was an anomaly; the world was our oyster and other than the communist scare, the Korean War, the threat of mutually assured nuclear destruction, etc. it was a wonderful time to grow up. I’ll never regret the experience. Sweet.

It's hard to top Jack and Benny's on High Street in Columbus (just north of OSU campus.

I can heartily recommend the Jack Buster: eggs, hashbrowns, cheese, bacon, and ham all layered with gravy on top, served with toast. MMMM!

Felipe’s in L.A. is not strictly a diner but has that definite throwback feel to it. Plus it is the home of the ORIGINAL French Dip sandwich. Oh, and I love the sawdust on the floor.

yeah, We actually had those early '60s drills...
in Ele. Sch. ( in PA :)...ignorance was bliss.
only now; we have the real thing...a palpable threat
to the economic life / future of our country..an home
grown (suicide bomber) from within our economic / political system.

I haven't been there in several years--don't get downtown very often, but when I do, I usually aim for the Eastside Market, an Italian eatery near Chinatown, or the Won Kok, a Cantonese restaurant a few blocks away. I especially liked the Pantry's prime rib. It wasn't always available.

I like Philippe’s, especially their lamb sandwiches. Just across Ord St. to the south is Regent Seafood, a fine Chinese restaurant with reasonable prices. This coming fall, Regent Seafood will be filled with diners wearing Cardinal and Gold on Saturday evenings following USC football games.
