Agreed. As much as current restaurateurs attempt to create a fifties diner, it is probably impossible to do it exactly, unless there’s one still in existence with all it’s original equipment, furnishings,etc. that can be truly copied/manufactured. Further, the food itself was different in its composition and processing. Other than cornball nostalgia, I think it’s a waste of time. They may come close, but it won’t be the same, but then again, does it even matter? The whole period after WWII thru the mid-60s was an anomaly; the world was our oyster and other than the communist scare, the Korean War, the threat of mutually assured nuclear destruction, etc. it was a wonderful time to grow up. I’ll never regret the experience. Sweet.
Felipe’s in L.A. is not strictly a diner but has that definite throwback feel to it. Plus it is the home of the ORIGINAL French Dip sandwich. Oh, and I love the sawdust on the floor.
