Astronomers have measured the precise distance to over a quarter of a million galaxies to gain new insights into a key period in cosmic history.
The 3D map of the sky allows scientists to probe the time six billion years ago when dark energy became the dominant influence on the Universe's expansion.
No-one knows the true nature of this repulsive force, but the exquisite data in the international BOSS survey will help test various theories.
The analysis appears in six papers.
These have all been posted on the arXiv preprint server.
"This is an incredibly exciting time to be working in cosmology, and we're all privileged to be part of the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS)," said Prof Will Percival from the University of Portsmouth - a UK member of the international research group.
"What we've done is measure the 3D positions for just over 250,000 galaxies, covering the largest volume of the Universe ever surveyed. That gives us an amazing map that we can then analyse to try to understand how and why the Universe's expansion is accelerating," he told BBC News.

BOSS: Dark Energy and the Geometry of Space

Like a Boss....
Related to the Hadron Oscillation Gravitational Geometry project?
As they look deeper into dark energy, they’re eventually going to run into the Sith.
"And darkness, where is its place,
That you may take it to its territory
And that you may discern the paths to its home?"
Job 38:19-20 NASB
This predates science's discovery of dark energy by four millennia, and it is not the only such successful prediction in Job.
If these dudes would accept Christ and go to Heaven when they die, the Designer/Creator would explain it all to them in detail. By rejecting Christ and thinking they can figure it out on their down, they ‘all not only wind up in the Lake of Fire; they’ll agonize for all Eternity never knowing what it’s REALLY all about. IMHO.
OK not so long ago I was informed in no unceratin terms that the moon is the result of a collision between a Mars sized planet and Earth. There was really no question. Nothing else could explain it. The models proved it. Today I learn that the moon is solely the product of the formation of Earth alone. The science proves it. Now you tell me that there is no question that around x-billion years ago something called “dark-energy” became the most dominant force in the universe. It’s called “dark-energy” because no one understands it, but they’re certain that x-billion years ago it became the dominant force. The science proves it. There is really no question.
The Bible says the universe had a beginning. Scientific consensus essentially scoffed at this idea until Penzias and Wilson “heard” the echo of the Big Bang.
Though I still like what Einstein said in that, “Science without religion is lame, (and) religion without science is blind.”
Einstein wisely understood the light that the two books of creation, nature and the Bible, shine on each other, but he foolishly stumbled over the problem of evil, which nevertheless has ready and fully satisfying explanations. Wisdom doesn't save--rather, faith, in both God's existence and in His goodness, is the sole requirement (see my screen-name and tag-line).
Happy Palm Sunday. Hosanna in the highest!
“Determinative” as far as the conventional scientific wisdom is concerned. I am perfectly satisfied that the Bible generally, and its numerous creation accounts specifically, which accord with each other, are true. Scientific understanding will continue to evolve, but increasingly it verifies what the Bible has always maintained.
Because thats what science is all about... right....
There is no conflict whatsoever between TRUE SCIENCE and GOD’S WORD. 99% of all the great true scientists in history believed and revered The Scriptures.
I didn’t say there was.
Why would we reject God’s gift in these wonderful brains of ours by not using them to their fullest?
That was not my point at all. My beef is with the individuals who are educated beyond their mental capacity, who start denying God, Creation, etc.
In closing: Psalms 111:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.
Unless someone is using their “wonderful brain” to glorify that brain’s Creator, they have not even reached THE BEGINNING of wisdom. Goodbye.
