A pillar has collapsed at one of Pompeii's most well-preserved buildings, officials in Italy said Thursday, the latest in a series of accidents to befall the treasured archaeological site.
The collapse took place on an external area of the House of Loreius Tiburtinus - also known as the House of Octavius Quartio - the office of Archaeological Heritage of Naples and Pompeii, said in a statement.
Officials were in the process of inspecting the causes and extent of the damage, the statement added.
The House of Loreius Tiburtinus is renowned for its artwork and large gardens.
In October a portion of a wall, situated near Pompeii's Porta di Nola entrance, collapsed due to damage by heavy rainfall.
Late last year, several walls and buildings collapsed at the site. One of these was a frescoed house where gladiators once prepared for combat, the Schola Armaturarum.
Concern has been mounting internationally that not enough is being done to protect Italy's historical sites, as the heavily indebted country struggles to cope with recession and the effects of the global economic crisis.
Once a prosperous Roman city, Pompeii was destroyed in 79 AD by an eruption of Mount Vesuvius, which killed thousands of people and buried the city in six metres of volcanic ash.

I may as well be first to say it. |

Any builder will tell you not to tear down a load-bearing wall. The rest of the house falls apart.
And who Zapataed his pillar?
I fully agree. Of course, I didn’t see any pics in the original article, so it isn’t worth much either.

I’d been hearing that the ruins of Pompeii had been suffering neglect in recent years.
How “renowned” is this place? Has it been on HGTV? Does a 35 year old blonde female fitness instructor live there with her 75 year old paunchy husband? Women might marry once for love, but after that it’s for a house overlooking the ocean.
That’s a shame. It is a very interesting place to visit.
sumpin' like dis.
Well so much for the vaunted Roman architecture. Thing didn’t last long, did it?
Stone countertops.....you can’t really say you’ve updated unless you put in stone countertops in the kitchen. I can see the realtor.....
“Oh, the columns have to go! I suppose you have orange shag carpet around here, too. Put in some stone countertops and we can ask, three, four hundred thousand for it.”
LOL!
I think they started out that way...
Sine the Villa refinanced in 2005 and took cash out, the building has gone to pot.
I probably have pics of this place from our recent visit. I must have shot a few hundred there and at Herculaneum.. man, is that place falling apart. :-)
HaPPy HoliDayZ!!
Maybe Vesuvius is warming up again. Man, I’d hate to have Pompeii covered up again before I get a chance to visit.
Let me be the first to say, “Welcome to Italy.”
