It's long been rumored that an ancient, isolated people in what's now northern Mexico ate their own kind, in the hopes that they'd be able to eat corn later.

Now an analysis of more than three dozen bones bearing evidence of boiling and defleshing confirms that the Xiximes people were in fact cannibals, archaeologists say.

The Xiximes believed that ingesting the bodies and souls of their enemies and using the cleaned bones in rituals would guarantee the fertility of the grain harvest, according to historical accounts by Jesuit missionaries...

"...The warriors would bring the dead victims back to the village, where Xiximes would rip the bodies apart at the joints, taking care not to break the bones. In cases when carrying a whole body was impractical, the head and hands would be removed and brought back to the village, according to INAH's research.

Body parts were cooked in pans until the bones emerged clean. The flesh was then cooked with beans and corn and eaten in a type of soup—part of an all-night village ritual, complete with singing and dancing, according to missionaries' reports...."

It wasn’t exactly a rumor...the Spanish reported on it when they first arrived in what is now Mexico and immediately took steps to stop it. They reported that they walked through markets that had human arms and legs hanging from racks in the stalls. In fact, there are even drawings of this.

The reason it has become rumor is because it is a controversial subject in academe and among modern native peoples.

There were tribes in what later became America that reportedly practiced cannibalism as well.

In an odd way, it kinda makes sense...

I didn’t realize it was controversial...it’s too bad for them that the Spanish recorded it so thoroughly, because that makes it pretty undeniable. But I guess anything can vanish down the memory hole if the right people want it to.

Uh, hate to break this for you, but If you read the ORIGINAL report of Cortez, there was not only ritualized, but casual and societal cannibalism.

We spend the years 1900-2000 ignoring and covering it up in the attempt to relativize civilizations and demonize Christianity.

But the facts are that it was a common practice, from the southwest, to the gulf coast, and all though central america.

After the Aztecs ritually sacrificed victims at the top of the pyramid, their bodies were rolled down the steps, where they were dismembered. Their legs and arms went into a stew that fed the people (socialism’s early form of soylent green). The torso and head were fed to the pigs. Upon approaching Tenoochtitlan, Cortez reports seeing the large red pyramids in the distance. Upon being in the city, he realizes the red is from the blood of victims. It was at this point, Cortez says in his diaries that something had to be done. No longer was he there for fame and fortune - he had a goal - to stop the killing.

Of course in the last 100 years, people have spent of lot of time trying to re-write history. Facts are, the whole of central america, the gulf coast and parts of the southwest were ruled by folks who practiced cannibalism.

Dear Sir, I am glad to hear that your studio audience disapproves of the last skit as strongly as I. As a naval officer I abhor the implication that the Royal Navy is a haven for cannibalism. It is well known that we now have the problem relatively under control, and that it is the RAF who now suffer the largest casualties in this area. And what do you think the Argylls ate in Aden. Arabs? Yours etc. Captain B.J. Smethwick in a white wine sauce with shallots, mushrooms and garlic.
