Weekly Gardening Thread – 2011 (Vol. 33) August 26

Good afternoon gardeners. I hope all of you in the path of Irene heed the warnings and please stay safe! Not much gong on garden wise here in East Central Mississippi. I am just waiting to see how a few paste tomatoes do. And while I am waiting I decided to use some of my pears to make preserves. I am using the recipe I posted on last weeks thread, which calls for a little activity and a lot of waiting. I will be doing the final canning step this morning. This recipe may be way to sweet for my taste. So with all this waiting time I had, I needed to fill the time some how so I ordered a Beer making kit, which I understand includes a lot of waiting also. Now I am just waiting for FR to come back up so I can post this week’s thread. I have been doing a lot of waiting and it is tiring.

If you are a gardener or you are just starting out and are in need of advice or just encouragement please feel free to join in and enjoy the friendly discussion. Our Freeper community is full of gardeners, each with varying interests and skill levels from Master Gardener to novice.

I hope all your gardens are flourishing.

Well folks my Beer Making kit was delivered yesterday morning. I washed and sanitized everything and started brewing 6 gallons of a Canadian Blonde Brew. It has been going for about 21 hours at this point. The yeast is fermenting away and has produced a nice frothy foam on top of the liquid. The picture shows every thing that comes in this kit. Fermenting Vessel, a 3.75 lb can of malted Barley and Hops. This ingredient has been precooked at the brewery and is like a very thick molasses. There is a yeast packet under the green lid. A 2.2 lb bag of sugars specially blended for Beer making is hidden behind the can. One of the 30, 740 milliliter (25oz) bottles with cap, and a small bag of secondary priming sugar pellets that go into the bottle when filling the bottles. On the shelf below is a large stirring spoon, a Bottling valve and a hydrometer for measuring specific gravities at various stages of the brew process. These measurements can be used to calculate the Alcohol content of the Brewed Beer.

The small bottle sitting on the large can of malt and hops is a powdered sanitizer that is mixed with water. I purchased this separately and it is not included in the kit.

It should be fun. I brewed beer years ago and it was great. However, I gave up alcohol not quite two years ago. Do you need a bottle capper?

That is what the hydrometer is for. After about six days you start taking daily specific gravity readings. When you get the same reading two days in a row the beer is ready for bottling. The beer is then conditioned in the bottles for 7 days. Longer conditioning times 2 weeks and up to 3 months will improve the flavor.

Looks interesting. Let us know how it comes out.

I am toying with purchasing a crock and some mother of vinegar to start using my leftover wine to make vinegar. Has anyone done that?

Hubby said Coopers is really good - and to tell you that you should begin “working out” now. It’s one reason he switched to making wine - gained a bunch of beer weight! :)

I tried making beer and every recipe I tried had a strong yeast flavor. I finally gave it up.

Does home-made beer taste good? Is it less filling? LOL.

I have a Muscadey Grape vine. Maybe in a few months I will be reporting in on my wine-making activities!

Some beers are meant to be yeasty.

You should have just let it age longer and the taste improves.

I don’t think I will have a problem with the weight. I have never had a weight problem, in the face of all the beers I have enjoyed, and have been around 145 to 150 ever since I left the Marines.

Home made beer is the best! It will almost make you give up store bought beer. One reason is it is FRESH!

I made a Samuel Adams clone more than a few times and now I think they are doing it wrong at the factory. Ha!

Too bad I gave all my beer making supplies away when I moved. :-(
