July 24, 2011, 10:11 AM President Pushover Updated: Drew article now available.
The redoubtable Elizabeth Drew has a forthcoming article in the New York Review of Books not yet online that confirms all our worst fears. She tells us that past concessions have
established in both Democrats and Republicans minds the thought that Obama was a weak negotiatora pushover. He was more widely seen among Democrats and other close observers as having a strategy of starting near where he thinks the Republicans areat the fifty-yard lineand then moving closer to their position. Even more alarming, however, is her window on what the White House is thinking:
It all goes back to the shellacking Obama took in the 2010 elections. The Presidents political advisers studied the numbers and concluded that the voters wanted the government to spend less. This was an arguable interpretation. Nevertheless, the political advisers believed that elections are decided by middle-of-the-road independent voters, and this group became the target for determining the policies of the next two years.
OK, Ive never won a tough election. But neither has Obama! The 2008 race was looking close until Sarah Palin and Lehman came along. And as far as I can tell, this assessment both of what 2010 was about and what matters for 2012 is just ludicrous.

True misery over there right now.
I made a few polite, not too snarky or provocative comments on DU and got banned.
Oh, the tolerance and diversity!!!!
Not sure why, but I am at least somewhat surprised that the comments on the NY Times site are even more moon-batty than those at DU.
I was the soul of gentility, not the least a troll. I really thought my tone was sympathetic, because I actually had some sympathy and was trying to understand their viewpoint.
Lmao. I confess, I could not help but be lighter fluid on the flame after ahwile. Just too easy and enjoyable.
I wonder what krugman and the NYT think reading those comments. Ha a ha.
How did you get into DU? I can’t see any of their posts any more. I haven’t been banned because I never signed up. I used to be able to lurk whenever I wanted to. Now I get one advertisement and a blank page. Yes, I disparage DU here at FR routinely. But it would be extreme—if not impossible?—to ban my IP addy just because of some trash I talked on FR...would it not?
Could happen, but he's already about hit rock bottom on his polling. His core base of support runs about 25%. What's he running now - about 40%? It could only get worse, if he loses even more Independents.
If the movers and shakers on the left aren't already thinking of tapping him on the shoulder, it's probably not going to happen. I'm thinking that murmurings of a challenge from the left should have already arisen, but they're nowhere in sight.
Did you really say that the left will dump The Lightworker from The Clouds for Hillary? LMAO...
True misery over there right now.
LOL!
Thanks, I’ll go take a peak.
I do it from my iPad.
Used a gmail account.
I tried being honestly in line w some of those wackos for awhile , but I couldn’t do it and just started fanning the Obama flames after awhile and got tossed.
I got tossed from HP for trolling a thread on mobacca. It was a puff piece and I was trolling on her obesity, hypocrisy, and ties to ayers dorhn etc.
Do it late in the campaign and get the “sympathy vote” too?
Everything not crossed out is a lie that keeps getting retold. Palin was the only reason McCain wasn't laughed off the stage.
This comment caught my eye:
“I hope Trumka and others will get millions into the street. Some buildings on fire will be a great background.”
That’s not the reaction of a sane person who loves his country. That’s the reaction of an Alinskyite that’s hell bent on trying to start a revolution by playing on the emotions of the weak-minded leftists that read the Times.
She was the only reason I volunteered for McCain. I went for a week on my own to PA to do vote fraud.
Maybe he could point at those scars on his noggin and dribble down his chin.
“The 2008 race was looking close until Sarah Palin and Lehman came along.”
Ok, Krugman obviously got this wrong. It’d be funny to see what happens in 2012 if Palin wins the Presidency lib heads will explode. “How could this happen?” “She’s so dumb?” “How did she beat the smartest president ever?”
Your last p caused me to LOL. I can see heads at HP exploding all over the place if anybody mentioned Michelle’s extra poundage. I think the word for that kind of posting is, ‘death wish’. ;)
DU just baffles me lately. It used to be two clicks for me to read all their headlines and any thread I wanted. Now I can’t get in for love or money. I don’t want to try to sign up. I can’t lie or obfuscate, so I would be banned after my first post. Not worth the time or effort. I do wonder why I can’t at least read their rants as a lurker. It changed ~a month ago. Hmmm.
True misery over there right now.
I visited, got disgusted and left. You’re right.
