Weekly Gardening Thread – 2011 (Vol. 26) July 08

Good morning gardeners. I have been planting 2 zucchini plants every year I have had a garden and this year is the first year they have produced more than my wife and I can use. I think their production is due to the four-foot spacing between plants I gave them. I may be able to participate in the annual “leave a zucchini on your neighbor’s porch day” this year. It is on August 8th.

I should be getting some ripe tomatoes soon; a few are developing a slight blush. Some netting will have to put up to protect them from the birds; I can’t afford to lose any this year. The jalapeno, pimento and bell pepper plants are doing great. There are some nice large pimentos and I am just waiting for them to turn red.

I hope all your gardens are flourishing.

I thought that at first too, or a lupine. It looks very close to the bellflower on the Illinois plant database, but not exact.

Thanks, DE is getting hard to find in stores these days so a backup is nice if I run out.

They LOVE parsley. I think the caterpillar is called the parsley worm. If you want to attract them plant that, and you’ll still have plenty of parsley to pick, they don’t seem to get it all, which is a fair deal.

SSGR is a great book, been growing grains now for a few years and building my seed stock just in case we ever have to get serious about having to survive on what we grow.

I was also in the middle of adding the first tire to my stack of tires tomato planter. But it was time to go make hay so I didn’t get it on before dark.

Tomorrow’s my sister’s wedding so I’m not gonna get it done then either...lol with no rain in sight,, the dirt can sit in the wheelbarrow and the tire can lay next to the potatoes until I get good n ready...hahaha

Finally had to water the garden yesterday, for the first time this season...not counting manure tea to fresh transplants. Got so ridiculous that I only half filled the large storage tank, and haven't put a drop into the small one so far. (1,600 gal total capacity. I also have a third, 400 gal metal I haven't used since getting the others, as the water heats up more than I like.)

This week we were finally able to pick some peas. Everything looks good, but being a month or so behind “normal”, it is problematical whether we'll get any of our longer season crops before frost.

“been growing grains now for a few years and building my seed stock”

I am just starting, but that was my thought as well. We might need it some day. I also just ordered the book on preserving foods without canning or freezing. I thought I would just try out one or two items to begin.

High on my list of wants is a cistern, and then maybe a root cellar.

To measure water in my earthbox I use two bamboo skewers taped together to make the length I need and then stick the sharp end into a cork from a wine bottle. Drop this down the PVC pipe and use a small piece of red ribbon tied to the top end of the bamboo at a level that indicates empty. If I can see the ribbon flying I know it has water.

You are pretty good with posting issues, so let me run one past you. I took some pictures of our harvest from yesterday and posted them to PhotoBucket. PB did the strangest thing, they posted sideways, 90 edg off. So I hit “edit” at PB and roatated and saved. Great. I then copied the HTML code to post here and pasted on my reply post to you. I hit preview and the pic was 90deg off again. I did this several times, still nothing. The picture was right as saved in my docs. I emailed wife the pics and she said that the thumbnails were 90 off, but they opened correctly. Any thoughts?

I may have to ask members of the Garden Threads to hold a fund raiser so I can pay my water bills this summer. At one time there were 2 large pulp mills across the bay using millions and millions of gallons of water from the HBMWD and subsidizing the residential and small commercial customers. The Marxist have achieved their goal by their constant legal and illegal harassment and the mills are a thing of the past leaving the water district with limited income and a surplus of water rights that they may lose to So Cal due to state law.

I don't know the answer. I had a strange thing happen also with PB. I took some pictures and loaded to PB and edited them to a smaller size and saved. went to the thumb nails in my album and copied the HTML code and pasted them in a post on the Gardening thread. They posted to the thread in their original size not the edited size. A few hours later I was scrolling through the gardening thread and came across my pictures they had been re sized to the correct size I edited them to. These were the pictures I took of my new propane weed whacker.

Could it be that PB editing takes some time to actually take affect?

I remember that from a couple of weeks ago. After posting the question to you, I thought that maybe I should just post the picture and see if it comes out right or not. If not, I just remove the pic from PB to remove it from the thread.

Other than one tomato a week ago and a few grape tomatos, this is our first harvest, with some more to come. I left them on the vine a little longer than I should, I guess, but I wanted vine-ripened taste! Photobucket
