Weekly Gardening Thread – 2011 (Vol. 26) July 08

Good morning gardeners. I have been planting 2 zucchini plants every year I have had a garden and this year is the first year they have produced more than my wife and I can use. I think their production is due to the four-foot spacing between plants I gave them. I may be able to participate in the annual “leave a zucchini on your neighbor’s porch day” this year. It is on August 8th.

I should be getting some ripe tomatoes soon; a few are developing a slight blush. Some netting will have to put up to protect them from the birds; I can’t afford to lose any this year. The jalapeno, pimento and bell pepper plants are doing great. There are some nice large pimentos and I am just waiting for them to turn red.

I hope all your gardens are flourishing.

I didn’t notice if they still had the fish food dispensers there. Did you take that pic?

I have got 6' plus tomato plants with barely any flowers. Should I give them more time or take them out and try again with some other varieties?

I can tell you what I've done.

I've pulled up all my determinant plants: Celebrity, Tycoon and BHN 444. Still in the ground and waiting for the Fall to hopefully bring lower temperatures are my indetermants and heirlooms.

Bob Webster, our local radio gardening guru, says that's the thing to do, even if your plants look horrible, which mine do.

Good luck!

My zukes are planted in pure horse manure. I didn't mix in any dirt. They've succeeded in choking out the eggplant, okra, and beans in the plot, and they're still going. The onlt thing that has survived their rampage is the cucumber, and I suspect that's because it has vined up the fencing. I give them all a good soaking about once per week, then pick the zukes two days later.

They haven't done as well in the front of my house though. The zukes I have there barely flower.

Thanks Racehorse.

My plants look great. In fact they could have their own basketball team. They are tall and green, but no flowers.

Gorgeous Just Gorgeous! Is Okra related to Cotton? and speaking of cotton if the weather continues to improve we will be planting it here to cash in on the high price...

I’m late to the party today. Started it off with a flat tire on the truck. Happy Friday to me. LOL

On the bright side, the garden has recovered remarkably from last Sunday’s wind storm. The sweet corn stood back up and aside from being full of holes from the hail looks great.

On the really bummer side my neighbor was not so lucky. He’s got a big market garden - lost everything to the hail. Said $50k-$60k down the drain. That would be hard to swallow.

Back on the bright side the green beans are needing to be picked every other day, picked a dozen cucumbers and ate the first ripe grape tomatoes yesterday. Yellow squash is producing, white squash about ready to start, peppers are blooming. Okra is up about 6” and looks good.

The staff keep bags of it for the winter months to keep the cats around plus they get them coming up in the morning with it as that hugh and series school is the main reason to go there.

The local joke was ‘let’s hurry up and eat dinner so we can go catch a buzz and feed the fish at Shades’.

ey are good at hiding and I will miss picking one or two at that size they are only good for the compost pile.

Wrong! Grate it and freeze it in 1 cup baggies. Use it for zucchini bread in the winter. M-m-m-m

Roger that!

The zucchini bread Mrs. Augie makes in the wintertime is absolutely fantastic. If it weren't for that I wouldn't plant it at all.

I don’t believe that the immature seeds are worth saving.

Thank you for your compliment!

Yes, okra is related to cotton. I'll have to find my cotton bloom photos ... I have the most disorganized collection that you could imagine! Okra originated from Africa.

Want me to send you some cotton seeds? :)

We all had a couple of beers there last night. One was for the wife’s birthday and the other for Perry not backing down yesterday. We used to take dog food pellets to feed the fish at our marina in LV.

Much as we all - rightfully - bitch about Perry, he’s the only one to take down zero. I feel if the markets are assured of him winning - now, not a year from now - we’ll start to see investors investing in America again now, not a year from now.

So I’m going to be pro-Perry from now on. Pimpin my ho.

Sigh........

Granted, I do not hold a candle to SWAMPSNIPER with my photos, but I was tickled to capture these visitors to my garden:

It sounds like each “Key” is very different from the other ones.

Each is its own island so is unique in its own way.

We’re in Cleveland and I’ve never noticed one before. Can’t imagine there are many gardeners near by growing the plants they like. However there’s plenty of Queen Anne’s Lace in the weedy patches of the city.

I’m always amazed by dragonflies and their jewel brightness - ruby, sapphire, lapis, emerald, topaz - to the extent I even let them mate on me just to watch them.

They like trysting on people floating in the middle of the lake for some reason. And not on the mat you’re floating on but YOU.

Why god chose to put their naughty bits in the back of their necks is an enduring mystery....

Yep, the lower temps in the fall will bring those indeterminates back to life and hopefully their tomatoes will ripen before the first frost. When they stop putting out flowers and look healthy I just leave them and try to keep them healthy until Fall.

Yep, Perry has his bad points, but I’ll take him over the squatter in the white hut any day. He has been good for Texas the last few years. I didn’t like the TTC idea, but he listened to us and backed off.

“I hate it when one of my zukes gets that big.”

I always let one or two get really big. They are wonderful split, scooped, stuffed and baked! For stuffing, just about any left overs will do!
With the drought, I’ll be fortunate to get some small ones this year!

Thanks for the thread. We are having a glorious day here in my corner of Missouri. Temps this morning 77 degrees and partly cloudy. Perfect gardening weather. High will be 84 degrees and low tonight of 65.

Yesterday we got 2 inches of rain. I wish I could share it with all of you who need it. My corn was chest high on fourth of July with tassels. Everything else is behind due to late planting.

Tomatoes in pots from the cuttings of the indoor winter tomatoes are healthy with lots of blooms. Cantaloupes have lots of blooms. I will be planting more beans and melons this weekend. Wild blackberries are ripening I almost have enough for cobbler.

Hubby has been thrashing his wheat by walking on it. I think we'll get about 6 coffee cans (2lb. size) full of wheat kernels. It doubles in size after grinding it.

I am currently reading Small Scale Grain Raising, and How to Grow More Vegetables. Wishing every one the best. Have a great weekend. God bless.
