Good morning gardeners. I have been planting 2 zucchini plants every year I have had a garden and this year is the first year they have produced more than my wife and I can use. I think their production is due to the four-foot spacing between plants I gave them. I may be able to participate in the annual “leave a zucchini on your neighbor’s porch day” this year. It is on August 8th.

I should be getting some ripe tomatoes soon; a few are developing a slight blush. Some netting will have to put up to protect them from the birds; I can’t afford to lose any this year. The jalapeno, pimento and bell pepper plants are doing great. There are some nice large pimentos and I am just waiting for them to turn red.

Remember that old seeds may have reduced germination. (Although I’ve had great luck with them. And for free, you can’t lose...) If possible, list year and variety.

If anyone needs or wants okra seeds (says JustaDumbBlonde)… please let me know. I saved a ridiculous amount in the fall of 2010. Two different varieties, Clemson and Jade, are both are heirloom variety so that you will be able to save seeds from your plants. Both are spineless and heavy producers. Jade is a bit darker green than Clemson and the pods are a bit shorter and fatter. Both are good for frying, soups, freezing, dehydrating or canning. Don’t be shy, l have more than plenty to share! Tip for planting okra: soak your seeds for 24 hours before planting. Okra seeds are hard like peppercorns and soaking will assist in quicker germination. Contact JustaDumbBlonde

Dry and moderate here. Could use a good rain because my water is not yet totally hooked up from its winter shut off. The barn swallows are having a field day eating up all the mosquitoes all day during their aerobatic flights.

As usual, I submit my request to the higher powers for after-dark rains only.

My neighbor reported driving up I-45 to Conroe from Houston the other day and it stormed heavily all the way up 45 to Conroe, then he drove out of it into the dry dusty side of town where we live in drought. I watched on the radar as yellow and red approached my area, then got nothing, nada drop. I even washed a truck each day through the holiday weekend, knowing that ALWAYS brings rain. Nope, at least the fleet is clean now.

I have got 6’ plus tomato plants with barely any flowers. Should I give them more time or take them out and try again with some other varieties?

Looking for some identification help. These are growing in full shade and get to be about 3 feet tall. They bloom in early July in southern michigan.

There were a few showers in our area Wednesday evening and during the night. A small town that is less than 10 miles from our home had the better part of an inch, and we didn’t get a drop.

That’s the way the weather works around here as well. We got more than 3 inches one night last week, yet just a few miles south of us got less than an inch.

Zucchini are the reason people lock their car doors in southwestern Indiana in the summer.

If they are not locked, you will probably find a sack of zucchini laying on the front seat when you return.

I’m getting really sick and tired of hearing the same forecast - hot and dry. There is not a single cloud in the sky now, and that just makes the air heat up faster.

My tomatoes started rotting around the stem so instead of wasting time I ripped them out and got more. Those seem to be doing fine. The tomatoes I did get off the first plants were fabulous - instead of canning I froze them.

I grew mustard greens for the chickens and after they went to seed I pulled them out - I noticed they were seething with shield-shaped bugs with the coloring of psychedelic lady bugs. Yellow orange and red. I am sure they aren’t friendly.

Melons are doing well - yellow squash and cabbage. I am on my second round of green beans. Froze most of them.

I am putting in my fall broccoli this week. Not a great yeild in this years garden. Oh well. I am planning a greenhouse this winter.

I've been leaving zucchini, cucumber, and peppers on the neighbors doorsteps for a few weeks now! I just wish that I had more tomato's. I get three of these monsters every week.

Violent thunderstorm the other night...rain was welcome, but high winds were not. Of course; out of 115 tomato plants; the ONLY one to sustain any damage was my rare Purple Haze plant. Blessed by G-d, though...neither of the two branches that were torn off had blossoms on them. I am trying to re-root them, so maybe I will wind up with THREE Purple Haze plants. The L-rd works in mysterious ways...

I went with the 'tomato mantra' this year and planted 'small but healthy' plants, and mine are LOADED with blossoms...unlike anything I have ever seen. Hopefully; this will results in tomato noms by the bucket load in short order. Another gift from G-d today in the form of a cloudy day in the upper 70's.
