Weekly Gardening Thread – 2011 (Vol. 13) April 15
Free Republic | 4-15-2011 | Red_Devil 232

Good morning gardeners. Today is NOT tax day! Y’all who file last minute can put it off until Monday the 18th. Why? In 2011, Washington, D.C., will celebrate Emancipation Day on April 15, a day earlier than normal, since April 16 falls on a Saturday. Emancipation Day marks the anniversary of the day that President Lincoln signed the Compensated Emancipation Act. The Act, which was "for the release of certain persons held to service or labor in the District of Columbia," freed 3,100 slaves in the District, making DC residents the "first freed" by the federal government.

Ok back to gardening. Looks like I will be getting rain today. There is a line of strong thunderstorms to the northwest and west of me. I had planed to rent a tiller today and till the garden plot. I will have to wait until the soil dries out now. Drats, another delay in planting! Some of my tomato and squash plants are begging me to get them in the soil. Received some nice seeds in the mail yesterday from Freeper Black Agnes. Thanks again. I should have the opportunity to get them into some soil and flats today!

If you are a gardener or you are just starting out and are in need of advice or just encouragement please feel free to join in and enjoy the friendly discussion. Our Freeper community is full of gardeners, each with varying interests and skill levels from Master Gardener to novice.

Okra and Tomatoes Au Vin-
Justin Wilson

2 tbsp. Olive oil
6 slices thick bacon, cubed
2 medium onions, chopped fine
1 clove garlic, minced
2 lb. Fresh-cut okra
4 medium tomatoes, cut into 6 or 8 pieces each
1 cup Sauterne wine or dry white wine (I only use about 1/4 cup)
1 or 2 tsp. Justin Wilson pepper sauce
1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
Salt
Put olive oil in a skillet large enough so that mixture can be stirred. Add cubed bacon, onions, and minced garlic. Sauté this for about 10 minutes. Add okra and tomatoes. Pour wine over this, and add pepper sauce and Worcestershire sauce. Salt to taste. Cook until okra is tender and has lost its green taste.

Death Camus is the one to avoid.

Onion has round (tubular) leaves. Camus is flat.

Didn't know there were poisonous ones...Best onion soup I've ever eaten was made with wild ones. We had a neighbor who literally lived off the land. Shoot a squirrel at dawn and fry it for breakfast etc. She never got around to writing the cookbook we begged her for.

Well you have not had a good day yet. Our snow pretty much melted as it fell because we are warm. Certainly a mix and match of weather though.

Work has been slow because it’s been so cold, but when the weather breaks, it’s going to get ugly, LOL!

Please pray for me... :)

Well Diana, we have had a few days in the 90s already, and no rain to speak of this year. I hope to get the rest of the tomaotes into the garden this weekend. We will keep you in our prayers.

I take ordinary culinary white vinegar (5%) and boil it on the stove, then pour it boiling hot on weeds. Seems to do the trick without acid-killing surrounding plants.

I am open to any better, or cheaper ideas.

We lost a member of our Church last week and the memorial service starts at 1 today then we get a call from Pastor telling us another long time member passed away this morning. That is 3 this year and we only have about 60 active members. Makes us appreciate every moment we get to spend in the garden or greenhouse when the weather allows...

It sounded a bit too conspiratorial to me. If it skipped the part about originally being developed as an ant killer, and simply said you could also use it as an ant killer, I might have believed it.

I tried raw okra for the first time yesterday. It’s actually quite good, and I suspect there may be some folks who would don’t like it cooked but would like it raw.

I also use it cooked a lot in stir fry and on pizza. I like the combination of okra and eggplant (especially on pizza).

Get a box of picnic forks.

Plant them with the tines up where you don’t want cats to walk.

It makes you appreciate the time spent with your fellow church members, too.

Dry molasses ( like you feed to cows ) work well on fireants. Spread a nice thick layer on and water it in.
