Hi everyone! It's time again for my "What Are You Reading?" thread.
As you know, I consider Freepers to be among the more well-read of those of us on the Internet. I like to find out what all of you are reading these days.
It can be anything...a technical journal, a NY Times best seller, a classic work of fiction, a trashy pulp novel. In short, it can be anything.
However, please do not defile this thread by posting "I'm reading this thread". it became really unfunny a long time ago.
I'll start. I'm about 15% of the way thru "Henry Clay: The Essential American" by David & Jeanne Heidler. Many books have been written on Henry Clay but this one seems to be the most comprehensive. At times, the authors can be a little long-winded - but all in all, it's a good book about one of the giants of the early 19th Century.
Well, what are YOU reading?
I’m impressed. I’ve tried reading two at once, but found it too confusing.
Guidepost, FR, Facebook
I liked “The Fall Of Berlin 1945”. I read it a few years ago.
But it wasn’t as good as Beevor’s “Stalingrad”.
Known and Unknown: A Memoir, by Donald Rumsfeld
You shouldn’t apologize.
Most of the posters here are either liars or duller than a rope.
Just finished “The Fourth Part of the World,” a fascinating account of slow and gradual process of learning the geography of our planet and how to map it, how America got its name, et cetera. About to begin reading “Rawhide Down.”
Started Dalrymple's Life at the Bottom: The Worldview that makes the Underclass.
Dalrymple's book really explains what is happening in England now. The destruction of the natural family and the "Father" figure has actually destroyed the vibrant culture that used to dominate in England. Really sad but I see America as heading into that abyss of Marxism/atheism/paganism/occultism--away from the Judeo-Christian principles that made that country a true powerhouse.
The destruction of the white male is the destruction of the Protestant ethics and virtues. This destruction and atheism/occultism is extremely ugly. The dysfunction and ignorance of the children is creepy. The ugliness is perfectly painted with the prose of Dalrymple.
“Essays of Lord Acton,” ed. by J. Rufus Fears
“The Spirit of the Quakers,” ed. by Geoffrey Durham
“The Ragged Edge of the World,” by Eugene Linden
My current read is “Desert Queen,” the autobiography of Gertrude Bell by Janet Wallace. It’s an interesting look at the politics of the middle east during the early 1900’s.
I’m almost done re-reading Atlas Shrugged in hopes of being done by the time the movie is released on April 15. Of course, since it’s not scheduled to show anywhere in my state, the next challenge will be to figure out how to view it.
A Bernie Gunther novel by Phillip Kerr.
If you don't know the series you should check it out.
Envy - A Theory of Social Behavior by Helmut Shoeck.
I bought “Life at the Bottom” a few months ago and I’ve read at least three times already. It’s just mind-blowing.
I've recently read... A Wise Mans Fear by Patrick Rothfuss The Last Gate by Orson Scott Card How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe: A Novel by Charles Yu River Marked by Patricia Briggs
None are overtly political in nature.
I’m re-reading Les Miserables, by Victor Hugo, after having seen the recent 25th anniversary concert from the stage musical, trying to remind myself of the bits the show had to leave out.
Whoa, good to see I’m not the only one w/a scattered and large list of books read at the same time! I’m reading: Cleopatra (Schiff), The Israel Test (Gilder), The Twelfth Imam (Rosenberg) Has Christianity Failed You (Zacharias), The New Vichy Syndrome (Dalrymple).
“The Last Lion Winston Spencer Churchill: Visions of Glory 1874-1932” and “The Last Lion Winston Spencer Churchill: Alone 1932-1940” by William Manchester
Excellent series. An advance warning to anyone who wants to delve into these. Book three in the series, “The Lion Triumphant Winston Spencer Churchill” is unavailable ANYWHERE. Hubby has a couple friends in the UK who haven’t even been able to find it there. I found that out after I finished the first book and started into the second. The first two are well worth reading, but just know, you’re going to be dropped off right as he becomes prime minister. Grrrr
“A time of exile” by Katherine Kerr. Celtic style fantasy.
