A group of transgender residents filed a lawsuit against New York City over what they say are burdensome requirements for them to change the gender on their birth certificates.
The city's birth certificate requirements amount to discrimination for transgender residents, said Noah Lewis, an attorney representing the residents in the case.
New York's Health Department requires residents to show proof of surgical procedures in order to change the gender status on a birth certificate. But the lawsuit, filed by the Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund in state Supreme Court on behalf of three residents, said many transgender people cannot afford the surgical procedures. Instead, a note from a doctor verifying someone's transgender status should be sufficient, it said.
The requirements mean many transgender people cannot get up-to-date or usable identification, Lewis said. "This subjects them to harassment and discrimination. They can be laughed at or turned away doing everyday transactions like going to the DMV (the Department of Motor Vehicles) or applying for jobs," he said.
One of those suing the city, Joan Prinzivalli, said she would like to get the surgery the city requires to prove she is female but she is unable to for health reasons. "This policy is unfair to me and to other transgender people who just want IDs that match who we are," she said.....

Change you can’t believe in...This is ridiculous...You want to do this...you’re on your own. You people are all messed up.
I always thought fraud was illegal!
A birth certificate is just that. An identification of what you were when you entered this world. You can mutilate your body any way you want however you will still be the same gender you were the day you were born.
I can have a doctor fashion me a tail and horn and can go around walking on all fours but that doesn’t make me a unicorn.
These people of course have a serious mental illness.
We cannot afford this any more.
We already have M and F for male and female. Do we need an abbreviation for Wanting to Transition to Female?
I don’t think they should be able to change them at all. Doesn’t matter if something got cut off or stuffed in or whatever. They were still born a certain gender.
So maybe that’s why Obama is hiding his birth certificate - it’s what I’ve long suspected: he is our first transgender president.
Probabaly a cover operation for Obama’s birth certificate...
When people change change an X chromosome to a Y, or vice versa, then they should be able to change their birth certificate.
Until then, your sex is set by your DNA and superficial changes are just that... superficial.
"Look! I had surgery! Now I'm a woman!"
"Dude -- you got your ears pierced. You're still a guy."
More extensive surgery doesn't really get anyone further down the road. You're born a man, or you're born a woman. You are what you are.
One of those suing the city, Joan Prinzivalli, said she would like to get the surgery the city requires to prove she is (a wanna-be) female but she is unable to for health reasons.
birth cirtificates should not be changed as a matter of law when it comes to such voluntary mutilations. (this is to exclude birth defect babies)
It should simply be a DNA test. Show the DNA test and that it was a clerical error. Otherwise these mental patients should just shut up.
"I'd hit that!"
Give them what they want, as long as the NEW Birth Certificates say “REVISED” in capital letters, and have the altered data printed in a special, bold font.
Birth certificates are a record of your birth, not what you did with your life.
