LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - It was a stunning development for students and staff at duPont Manual High School: a teacher has resigned and police say she could face serious charges after being found partially clothed with a student in a local park.
Now we're learning more about 38-year-old Carrie Shafer.
Manual students say Shafer's resignation Sunday was all the talk around school Monday.
And they say the reason it's so shocking is because, according to them, Shafer is a married mother who also led their chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Manual students we spoke with had nothing but kind words for Shafer, the former advanced biology teacher.
Kyle Peterson says he heard the news from another teacher who was visibly upset.
"A science teacher came in and told the class about her resignation and he was almost in tears because he felt bad for her," Peterson said.
"She's a good person at heart and you can really tell that in her classes," Peterson said. "And she cares about her students."
But police say Shafer may have cared too much for one of those students - a teenage boy they say she was found with Friday night in a car parked at Miles Park across from Valhalla.

Nice double standard you got there...
Sin... its end is to rob, kill and destroy... keep your house, the destroyer knocks...
It might be more a matter of access than of anything else. The more opportunity, the more gettin' it on.
“Not Guilty by reason of Good Looks.(sarc)”
What’s the “(sarc)” for? Clearly NOT GUILTY!!!
The reporter’s name was Rodney Cox.
You can’t make this stuff up!
“Manual High School”
Ok, well, she’s only living up to the name of the school and helping the students with their ‘hands-on’ studies.
Perhaps they should rename the school if they don’t want this type of crap to go on.
I also have a double standard that Julian Paul Assange is responsible for doing exceptionally grave damage to the security of the United States, as is US Army Private Bradley Manning, but Manning's crime is worse. I think Manning should go to Leavenworth for life, as the mildest acceptable sentence, while I am not entirely certain whether Annange committed a crime although I'm sure that what he did is not as bad as Manning's treason. When I look at different situations, sometimes I decide that they are different. Often that is the right answer.
“I see the two crimes as completely different. An adult man who seduces a female student (or a male student) is far more likely to be successful only because of the difference in power. An adult woman who seduces a student is far more likely to succeed because it’s what the student would want regardless of whether it’s his teacher or a total stranger. Both should lose their jobs and go to jail, but the man’s crime is usually worse in fact, and he should go to jail for far longer.”
I have to respectfully disagree with that blanket statement.
If it was a diminutive adult man and an amazonian female student, would the man’s crime not be as worse?
Big Media almost never discusses the M-M and F-F teacher-student relationships, but we have to figure they happen. How do they figure into your power model of criminal severity?
Manning should hang.
I don’t get it at all. Do they realize they are 40 and not 16? I mean have they not accepted the FACT of life that we get older? I was driving my friend’s teen daughter to a school event one evening and she pointed out a boy that she thought was cute and asked my opinion. I said he’s nice if you are a teen. I pointed out a man around my age and asked her if she thought HE was cute. Answer: gross! That’s the way it is suppose to be. IMHO

Are you for real? What a ridiculous conclusion. You’re probably a male who who fantasizes about such a situation and is dangerous in his own rite. Cripes.
I’m only 34 but when I set foot on a college campus I feel like I’m surrounded by children. As a parent I feel a responsibility to protect them regardless if they are or aren’t mine.
The law should be equal when it comes to these things.
Just asking
“Based on the photographic evidence no way is she guilty.”
But we all need to keep in mind that we’re usually dealing with mug shot photos (rather than Facebook)...so she has a major advantage over most of the women we sit in judgment over.
But even so...I suspect her mugshot will meet our standards for innocence.
Nope, but not all decisions are based on the Constitution. I also think that when a woman kills her abusive husband to stop the abuse but when she was not in immediate danger, that's both legally and morally different from a woman killing her rich husband for the money. There is no constitutional basis for that opinion either, but I'm right.
Probably due to her vows of celibacy.
She’s got that insane look in her eyes.
My blanket statement was meant to be a general summary that is often correct, not a yardstick to be blindly applied to all instances. The small man, amazonian female student situation strikes me as likely to be different in the dynamics, but it's also rare. As for the M-M, F-F situations, our beloved media have decided that they are not news, so we don't know a lot about them.
That’s waaaay too much of a double standard for me...
No big deal. We were just doing fartlek, honest.
