AUBURN, Ala. (AP) -- Auburn University says someone deliberately poisoned trees at Toomer's Corner, where fans have long celebrated big wins and hundreds gathered after the Tigers won the football national championship on Jan. 10.
The university said in a statement Wednesday that a herbicide commonly used to kill trees was applied "in lethal amounts" to the soil around the two trees, and that they likely can't be saved.
Auburn discovered the poisoning after taking soil samples on Jan. 28, a day after a man called a syndicated radio show based in Birmingham saying he had used the herbicide on the trees.
"The weekend after the Iron Bowl, I went to Auburn, Ala., because I live 30 miles away, and I poisoned the Toomer's trees," the caller told The Paul Finebaum Radio Show, saying he was at the Iron Bowl.

What does that mean?
Define “attended”............;^)
Supposedly the idiot who did this was 62 years old and he was motivated by viewing a video clip from 1983. What stake could this old f**t possibly still have in college sports, and how can a trivial event from a generation ago be his motive?? I smell serious psychological issues at work here.
For the purposes of this discussion, I'll say they "attended" if they signed up, then never made it to class.
Rolling = toilet Papering.............
If you aren’t from Alabama you just can’t understand.

Okay!........Party! Party ! Party!...............
Toilet papering the trees? Is that how all fans of semi-pro football celebrate?
Sorry about your friend.
Listen, football is fun and all, and I have 3 degrees from the University of Alabama, so you know where my sympathies lie.
I don’t like pranks and practical jokes, but they are an inescapable fact of life, and some of them are damn funny sometimes.
But this wasn’t a joke, this was pure malice and needs to be punished. I hope they got the right guy; I suspect they did. Anyboody stupid enough to pull a crime like this and then go on radio and brag about, well, first they are going to leave PLENTY of evidence lying around. And second, they deserve to be punished for the stupidity alone, let alone the crime that accompanied it.
I read where they are going to try to save the trees, although they don’t have much hope. I wish them the best of luck in this attempt.
Okay..I get it now.
That is generally the case. They are the gutless wonders who call sports radio and post vile messages on forums.
Life goes on for all of us who have attended the Universities; we work together, live together (our son is a Bama fan!), and realize that winning a football game isn’t going to make you a better person. The media would want you to think we are the Hatfields and McCoys down here. We love our rivalry, but the toothless goons on both sides have a way of ruining it.
These sports a*hole fans need to get a life. The SEC is friggin crazy, fans like no other..
Wrong. I'm an Alabama fan, but the hate lasts for four quarters then we sit down and have a beer together. I rooted for Auburn in the BCS Championship.
I’ve got plenty of outrage for both, myself.
I knew a kid in high school. In fact, he dated my sister once or twice. Anyway, after graduation I lost contact.
so one night I’m reading the paper, and read where he had been murdered down in Mobile or Montgomery, I forget which.
Turns out, he had become an abortion doctor. The FBI got involved etc, until they figured our he was just robbed coming out of a “adult” theater; it wasn’t involved with his work at all. They lost interest fast.
I was emotionally conflicted. I had known and liked him, yet he became a monster. But mostly I was disappointed at the choices he made and outraged at the things he had done.
don’t know why I brought this up, but I’ll let it stay.
Years ago some Occultist doing some witchcraft ceremony poisoned a historic oak down in Texas.
The people immediatly took cuttings to preserve the lineage of the tree and horticulturalists worked hard to try to save the tree. I don’t know if they were successful.
That being said, we have a lot of folks who are not alums of either university that are great fans and enjoy the college atmosphere we have in Alabama as much as anyone. We have no ‘pro’ team in this state, so we have all gravitated to NCAA football. It is ingrained in our culture.
Come bowl time, I root for every SEC team. We have backyard brawls all fall, and then we band together at bowl season. Loved the whipping y’all put on Mich State. :)
Another use for the lumber!
This has to qualify for a segment on the world's stooooopidest criminals. Did he not realize the radio station made use of Caller ID? Or did he give the screener his real name and why he called before going on the air? What an idiot.
I bet his Mama would be proud.
