I agree. The new “redesigned” trophies are awful. Hey, lay off Jay everyone. The guy was creamed with sacks all year. He’s no wuss. Neither of the Super Bowl teams this year rank with the “greats.”
My father used to bring that up whenever we (infrequently) discussed athleticism.
It always impressed me, even though I'm not generally an Ali fan.
It's not just the team, the players and the owner, but the fans, and the bandwagon fans.
Contemplating that team winning a SEVENTH NFL Championship makes me cringe.
I was an Ali fan then, although I can’t say I’m a fan of his politics looking back. His political controversy was before my time - he was never Cassius Clay to me.
Probably thinking of the fact that Jay Cutler is -- and God only knows why -- the second highest paid NFL quarterback with a $25 million contract with the Bears, with huge end-loaded bonuses into 2013. That's coming off a guaranteed $11 million salary with Denver where he signed a six-year $48 million contract with the Broncos in July 2006 before he got traded to the Bears for some used soccer equipment and two fifth-round draft picks.
Caleb Hanie, the third string Bears QB outperformed Cutler in the NFC Championship game in every way yet he only makes the NFL minimum salary of $390k. No bonuses -- I sure hope that Chicagoans aren't letting Hanie pay for anything wherever in town he goes.
Sure, Cutler by all understanding was ruled unable to continue playing due to injury. I understand that. If I were a Bears fan, I'd still be utterly appalled nevertheless at our brand-new second-hand zillion dollar prima donna quarterback.
Personally, I think Jay Cutler is a perfect price-versus-performance example of the spendthrift ways of Obama's Chicago.
If true, that's why they have to be heartsick the Bears mortgaged their future on this unreliable quarterback.
Cutler had a mediocre year. Once he finally stopped being a punching bag he still averaged an INT a game, plus 10 fumbles. The jury has been in on Cutler for a while, he’s good QB who will never be a great QB, and the Bears traded away way too much to get him. Although in many ways he kind of belongs with the Bears, he’s very typical for a Bears QB, few of whom are terrible, none of whom are great.
Kyle Ortman was too much to give away? Anytime you can get a young probowl QB you grab him. He’s had near record passing yardage here team wise. The Bears have had a lot of awful QBs. He’s the best in Bears history - most talented anyway. If they get him a more stable line and at least ONE legit #1 reciever he’ll be fine.
Kyle Orton AND 3 first day draft picks (1st and 3rd in 09 and 1st in 10). He was only a pro-bowl QB because he was on a popular team. In his 68 games played he’s tossed 79 INTs, been sacked 138 times, and fumbled 48. That means he averages 2 turnovers (or almost turnovers since some of those fumbles get recovered by his team) and 2 sacks a game.
While I know the Bears have a long history of mediocre QBs Cutler is nowhere near the best, not in his performance anyway. Maybe he’s got more talent, but he ain’t using it. His only really solid stat is his completion percentage stays solidly near 61%, other than that he’s so-so. It might have been easier to have a legit #1 receiver if they hadn’t given up two 1s and a 3 to get Cutler.
QBs are harder to find than recievers. Cutler threw for massive yardage in Denver. That’s why he made the probowl. Who’s a better Bears QB? Sid Luckman? Jim McMahon was a merely solid QB on a great team.

Until then, my advice to Cutler would be to consider refraining from acting like Jim McMahon. ;-)
I'd probably wait on going that far. I just think that Cutler is a prima donna with a solidifying public image problem that he's helped create. Folks aren't willing to give a person like that the benefit of the doubt.
I say this as a Packers fan who hopes Aaron Rodgers becomes regarded as a great QB someday soon. Right now, I'm willing to refer to Rodgers as a 'beast'.
For the Broncos he threw for 3500 yards once and 4500 yards another time, he’s been back down to 3500 hundred in his time with the Bears. One big season really isn’t that big a deal. McMahon threw fewer interception per game than Cutler. That’s the big negative for Cutler, all his good stats are countered by averaging 2 turnovers a game. He’s inconsistent. The probowl is a popularity contest it has absolutely no relationship at all to a player’s actual skill or value, all it means is that a lot of fans like him.
He’s had 4 full seasons as a starter, he’s never finished a year with a passer rating above 90, he’s averaged an interception a game throughout his career, and his best year in pretty much every statistic was his 2nd. There’s no reason to wait, he’s not a great QB, and he’s not showing any form of progress or improvement. I suppose it’s possible for him to have a come to Jesus moment ala Vick and actually start developing his skills, but given how very consistent (and consistently so-so) his numbers are without that moment of clarity there’s no reason to suspect we haven’t already seen his best year, which had 18 interceptions.
Favre, Marino and Elway threw a lot of interceptions as well. Are they not great QBs? Cutler is far from popular - based the reaction to his injury among players, he’s one of the most disliked players in the league. But I would put him in the top 10 QBs in the league.
He was popular the only year he made the probowl. That was two years ago, before he had his little pouty fit about finding out his team was willing to trade him for a good enough offer (apparently he’s too dumb to know ALL teams are willing to trade ALL players for a good enough offer). If he’s top 10 he’s #9 or 10 which makes him middle of the pack. He’s just plain not that good, he joins the long line of Bears QBs that were good but not great. It’s something Bears fans are used to, time for you to join the rest and accept the truth, he ain’t great and 2 years after he’s gone, assuming the team doesn’t replace him with the next Grossman, you won’t miss him.
When Mike Shanahan was asked to rate Cutler’s Arm Strength on a scale of 1 to 10 with John Elway being 10, Shanahan said 11. He might have the strongest arm in the league. You have to realize that his interceptions the last two years are a function of not having a single goto reciever. None of the Bears recievers would start on most other teams. Their “top” reciever is Johnny Knox, who led the league in ‘balls thrown to you being intercepted’. He’s soft and doesn’t fight the defender for the ball. Cutler has to thread the needle each time. The passing records for the Bears are still held by Sid Luckman who played in the 1940s. It’s a dismal bunch of QBs and Cutler is at or near the top.
