Federal regulators are hard at work making the world a safer place for kids -- starting with the threat posed by toxic paper clips.
Never heard of a toxic paper clip? Neither have the manufacturers of science kits for classrooms across the country.

There was a day I would be skeptical about this, Long time ago. Sad it isn't the case anymore. They never stop. Absurd!

I completely agree with you!
I'll even add to your list of "can't do's"......
- Red Rover is a dangerous game
- Dodge Ball is a dangerous game
- Tag is a dangerous game
- Absolutely NO pointing your index finger in a manner simulating a gun and playing "cops and robbers".

It’s one of those head-slapping articles that just make you cringe in amazement and the stupidity of our government agencies!

The only possible reason i can think of that they would even go there is that dissimilar metals in acid could do some wild stuff.
I am sure they got rid of acid a long time ago in those science kits.
When I was a kid my best pal had the mega “Gilbert” chemistry set. It had all the chemicals you could dream of.
But it was still pretty tame.
We weren’t satisfied. We added solutions from his mothers ‘beauty parlor’
The result was a smoke filled house from spontaneous combustion in a trash bin at 4 am.
When we got access to the materials in the lab at an undisclosed university years later all hell broke loose!

Hey kids. Here is a neat one.
Distill ammonia to about 11%
Distill tincture of iodine (I forget the percentage)
Mix the components. ***Dont be skeered, its stable when wet***
Let that dry and it is so unstable it will explode if a fly lands on it!
They taught us that stuff in high school!
We wound put it under toilet seats. Just a dab will do ya!

I bought one a few years back to thwart off the javelina that were invading my place. But, while practicing, I shot a hole clear into a large rock. Decided then, that it would be too dangerous to use on the poor little piggies. :)

Anyone remember the old Things of Science boxes? As a kid in the 50s, I got some old ones (from the 40s) from a neighbor and signed up myself. Loved em until they started getting cheezy.YES!
They were great. The arrival of that blue-and-yellow box (or envelope) was a major celebration when I was a kid (born '52). I still credit those with helping to foster my interest in science and engineering.
