Who's ordering the Nissan Leaf? Bill Nye, Alyssa Milano, wealthy baby boomers and perhaps even you

Nissan's director of product planning, Mark Perry, met with folks over at Inside Line to discuss the demographics of the company's Leaf electric vehicle. Perry revealed some info that we've touched upon before, but with the company now able to glean data from the more than 19,000 Leaf pre-orders, a concise buyer profile has finally emerged: They are very tech savvy, they are college educated and most drive less than 50 miles per day. Home ownership is a big component of the profile. And they've got garages. In addition, Perry told Inside Line that 80 percent of Leaf buyers don't drive a Nissan vehicle today and most own several other vehicles, including hybrids like the Toyota Prius. Here's a rundown of what Perry had to say:

The average buyer of a 2011 Nissan Leaf is a 45-year-old baby boomer.

The typical buyer has an income of about $125,000 a year.

Well, as soon as Obama brings back a vibrant economy and makes everyone really rich, I imagine that a great many people will rush out and buy a Leaf.

But for now ... not so much.

I’m sorry, but there is no way that a 45 y.o. is a “baby boomer.” The Boomers were the result of the end of WWII around 1945.
Being one of the original “Boomers”, I resent the name being usurped by some “kid” born in ‘64.

I"Can i mow my lawn with it?"

If it is a flat lawn and small, say, 20' by 20'.

Nissan, at a minimum they should calculate the cost per mile relative to a standard combustion engine of reasonable efficiency and make it available at the time of purchase. Not all states pay the same for electricity and some pay significantly more than others, possibly more disproportionate than gas.

"The average buyer of a 2011 Nissan Leaf is a 45-year-old baby boomer."

I'm 41 and I consider myself a Gen-Xer...I doubt there are a whole lot of 45-year-olds who consider themselves "boomers", but then again, I doubt there are a whole lot of people who will be buying the "Leaf", so maybe they do have their demographic targeted accurately.

Watch the prices for them in the used market. That will tell you how successful the car is in the marketplace.

MSRP: about $20-29k.

Folks could probably buy a car like that.

My theory is that these types of vehicles are designed by people who secretly hate cars or any form of private transport. They want to make the driving experience as unpleasant as possible so that you’ll prefer a bus.

Hilarious - and I know several jerks like this here in my town — but there’s another group, too — who could not possibly afford any new car much less a “Leaf.”

They are the old (or younger) hippie types who live on the dole and won’t shut up about environment this and save the planet that -— One in particular was a classmate in the sixties and I finally had to UNfriend him after a nasty Facebook exchange — he was shrieking about solar panels and electric cars and all the rest that he constantly blathers on about, while he collects his welfare check and mooches off of others who feel sorry for him.

I finally had had enough of this guy’s dictating to the rest of us on FB about how to live and what to drive and what to eat so I told him off — and UNfriended him as well as a host of others who think the same way he does — these are not my ‘friends,’ merely former classmates from the sixties. A pox on them and their beliefs!

Bill Nye is only buying one to one-up Ed Begley. Bill is Ed's neighbor in real life and is in a continuous "keeping up with the Joneses" game with Ed on the green stuff.

Are they kidding? They named a vehicle the Leaf?

I don’t think I could have come up with a dumber name for a car if I tried.
