Don't hold your breath waiting for Beatles songs to go on sale at iTunes or other online retailers, Yoko Ono said on Thursday.
The Fab Four have long resisted the allure of digital downloads, instead selling millions of old-fashioned compact discs last year after remastering the catalog.
Apple Corps, the group's holding company has been unable to agree on terms with EMI Group, which licenses the Beatles' recordings. And then there's the unrelated Apple Inc, owner of iTunes, the world's largest music retailer.
Apple and Apple have had a difficult history over rights to the name. But that trademark dispute was settled in 2007, and speculation has regularly popped up ever since that the two companies would strike an iTunes deal.
"(Apple CEO) Steve Jobs has his own idea and he's a brilliant guy," Ono, the 77-year-old widow of John Lennon, told Reuters. "There's just an element that we're not very happy about, as people. We are holding out.
...Ono said her comments did not necessarily reflect the opinions of the three other equal shareholders in Apple Corps -- McCartney, bandmate Ringo Starr and Olivia Harrison, the widow of George Harrison. But she added that the infamous rancor of the past has been replaced by smooth consensus because "we're older and more experienced."
...Ono was reluctant to discuss upcoming Beatle-related activities, but has plenty of projects in the works to commemorate Lennon's 70th birthday on October 9, and the 30th anniversary of his murder on December 8.
"LENNONYC" will premiere nationally on November 22, as part of PBS' "American Masters" series...
..."I'm 77, so I think this could be my last effort, so I'm really trying very hard," she said...

PING
Oh why did Chapman have to use all of his bullets on John?
“Don’t hold your breath waiting for Beatles songs to go on sale at iTunes or other online retailers, Yoko Ono said on Thursday.”
Hey ... I got your apple right here ...
Dear Yoko: while you and the others attempt to squeeze one more $20 bill out of the public for 40-year-old works they already have purchased multiple times in multiple formats the whole of the Beatles catalog is available for FREE in glorious loss-free FLAC or 320k MP3 from many Internet outlets.
Leverage is called leverage for a reason and you don’t have as much as you think you do.
He used five on John........
In other words....
We got our fans to buy 45s.
Then we got them to buy LPs.
Then we got eight tracks.
Next we got them to buy the exact same music on CDs.
And we are not done milking them yet.
If he used one on Yoko he would have been a hero.
It’s their loss, not that any of the parties need that income. Most of us old folks that want digital music of the Beatles already have it.
More than 40 years after their LAST RELEASE, the Beatles are selling millions of records a year.
Amazing, simply amazing.
Personally, I'm not surprised.
Many people think of her as the woman who broke up the Beatles. But there are some people who view the Beatles as being the band that derailed Yoko Ono's career path.
EMI sold 69,000 Paul McCartney Wings/Solo albums last year. Paul has moved his own back catalog away from EMI.
Drug addict communists. I think I will survive without their music online.
During the Napster gold rush, I was downloading Beatles songs; each and every one I had on the shelf in one form or another. Sure I could have ripped them, but downloading is so much fun.
Now I buy music legally via iTunes. I would love to live to see another creative era in music; so I’m not going to short circuit the process.
<Oh why did Chapman have to use all of his bullets on John?
OMG, that has to be the funniest thing I’ve heard in a long time! I was gonna post something nasty about Yoko (whom I’ve heard sing in person, don’t ask...), but why bother when we’ve got FReeper gold right here!
And after McCartney’s remarks about George Bush, I have no intention of sticking another cent in his pockets.
Guaranteed I will never purchase a Beatles song.
Dont they still play them for free on classic rock fm stations all the time?
for those willing to be PIRATES and thieves... I'm not.
Keep in mind MP3 downloads have VERY low sound quality - significantly lower than typical CD.
Ultra high quality (24-bit/96Khz) downloads are becoming more widely available that closely approach the quality of the master tape.
