Let's say you're in a rush after buying a fan at Costco. You look past the line packed with people and carts and spy a lone employee standing by the exit. Do you walk over and show your receipt? What's the worst that could happen? Let's ask Reader Shay.
On June 23, 2010 at the [redacted] Costco Center at around 11am I made a quick stop in to return a couple items and to pick a fan. Both the returns process and the checkout went wonderfully as usual. It only took me 2 minutes to get in line and pay for the one item I had.
However when I reached the exit door there was a line of 8 people with baskets of stuff waiting to get out the door. So I went to the other door which does have exit illuminated above it and showed the lady standing there my receipt and one item. She shook her head at me and pointed at the line. When I started to walk out the exit anyways she grabbed a hold of my arm and told me to go to the other line. I told her that I was already running late and the line was moving very slowly, so I continued out the exit. At this point her hand slipped off of my arm and she grabbed a hold of my purse. The first time I politely asked her to let go of me, to which she promptly ignored me. So I continued to walk out the door as she still held onto my purse, eventually grabbing onto it with a second hand and began tugging it. I finally started yelling at her to let go of me when we were in front of the exit area (directly center to both entrances). Even after people started stopping and staring at us, She continued to tug on my purse and would not let go no matter how loud I yelled. She finally let go when I knocked her hands off of my purse with pretty reasonable force.
I was honestly pretty shaken up over this. I really couldnt believe someone would do this in a public place especially an employee of that store. I sat in my car for about 5 minutes and calmed down. Then I had to find the number for Costco, because no where on my receipt does it list a phone number. I finally got a hold of the stores assistant manger and explained what had happened. He was polite and apologetic and end up meeting me in front of the store so I could point out who had done this to me. He said that he would speak with this Employee and that the Store Manger would call me when he came in.
True to his word the store manger did give me a call a few hours later. He once again apologized for the situation. I explained to what had happened and he confirmed that the statement that the employee had to fill out stated exactly what I had told him.
I have also mailed a letter to the regional manger letting him know exactly what happen as well. This should have never happen to me and I will continue writing to members of Costco Management, to ensure that this doesnt happen to anyone else. There should be a Zero Tolerance Policy for this type of employee behavior.
Costco should cancel her membership.
Well since I’ve never tried it it I have no idea. I’d guess though they apply the same rules to everybody, unless they have some sort of different layout for the non-member booze buyers to get in and out there’s probably going to be a receipt check on the way out.
When you purchase something at a store, and have a receipt for it, there is no legal requirement that you stand in some line to to wait show that receipt to another employee. Ir there is a legitimate exit (not an emergency exit), and you choose to use it I believe that is your right.

What I gather from reading your comment above is that you don’t really know whether you have to do what they say or not. I’d be very surprised to find out that the company is not within their rights to do this; it is done at Best Buy, Guitar Center, and a few others as well.
I don’t feel myself to be so important as to be above this.
I fail to see what the big deal here is. Active loss prevention keeps costs down, at least in theory. And gosh, it takes all of about 5 seconds to get through the line.
This is why the receipt checkers should be armed with tasers, so the folks who think that they are above doing what everyone else has to do can be tased. (just kidding)
I paid for the merchandise, it was mine, and I refuse to be held hostage by some store bureaucrat.

LOL. Yes, LOL.
To refer to receipt checking as being held hostage clearly demonstrates you have this issue firmly in perspective.
My goodness, some of us reeeeeaaaallllly need to get over our bad selves.
I wonder if all these folks who think you should not be inconvenienced by pausing for a receipt check at the exit just drive through the gate at the car rental lot at the airport. After all, they paid for the car rental, they shouldn’t have to show no stinking rental agreement to no stinking gate attendant!
Yes.
:>)
Watch yer grammer...
Why, she ain’t done nothin’.
Well yes and know...........
>>FR is a conservative site,<<
Wrong! FR use to be a conservative site.
It is disappointing to see the number of ‘stand in line’ sheeple posting on this thread!
You misspelled noe.
Did knot!
Did two!
Whoa, don't be so hypersensitive. Oh well, at least your post gave me a good laugh.
When I go in a store in the day time I want to get in there and buy what I want and I want out. A lot of people you see running for doors in places like Walmart, Lowes, Home Depot, etc are simply ones who can not tolerate the places except long enough to get what they need. They are very sensitive to some of the environmental noises there. Some know they are. Many more don't but become agitated and simply want to leave the store. I fall into that category.
I’ve often wondered if these companies like Safeway use these customer donations as part of their corporate “donation” totals.
More importantly, do they deduct them from their taxes??
The most depressing was the day I noticed our local Christian bookstore had put in anti-shoplifting devices at their doors. I don't fault them for doing it, but that is a truly pathetic commentary.
Almost immediately the idiot employee picked up the cake which smeared around the inside of the plastic case and tried sticking it in a different basket.
I told him PUT DOWN THE CAKE AND GO GET ME ANOTHER ONE.
He advanced on me and I provided him some words he hadn't heard of before ~ I figure he outweighed me 100 pounds and was a foot taller, and probably 40 years younger. So, I stepped toward him, the cashier ran away from the cash register, other customers stepped backwards and I prepared to push his nasty mouth all over the store. My son who is a foot taller, a hundred pounds heavier, 40 years younger, and really, really, really rugged looking with his Paul Bunyon beard advanced forward with me.
The punk turned and ran and I shouted after him DON'T COME BACK IF YOU KNOW WHAT'S GOOD FOR YOU.
The manager came over to see what was up ~ he went and got me a new cake.
I asked him to make sure that young buck got fired because if I came in again and he was there I was prepared to protect myself.
Never saw the fella' again.
Are you sure he didn't get elected president?
Naw, that punk would never work in a COSTCO ~ they make the employees lift stuff.
