25 Horribly Sexist Vintage Ads
by Oral Adams
Since the 50s, a lot has changed in way of womens rights and their duties in and out of the house. I highly doubt any company could get away with phrases like The Chef [mixer] does everything but cook thats what wives are for! nowadays. Or how about an ad agency pitching a company an idea of a wife bent over her husbands knee as he prepares to spank her.

I dont think anyone wants to see women be degraded and suppressed in our culture as they once were The thing is, it's worse now. Women were treated with respect in public pre-Roe. I remember! Men everywhere were kind and paid attention to any woman. All men would open doors, put air in her tires, carry packages, etc. It was a lot of fun.

Any guy who gets his wife a vacuum cleaner for Christmas is freakin crazy. ...but it is perfectly fine for a woman to buy her husband a power drill. Please.
Does anyone remember when Walter Williams would talk about buying his late wife a new snow shovel one Christmas to make cleaning the driveway easier on her. Then the following year he bought her ice crampons so she wouldn't slip. That proved ironic.

If that was from 1960, the car cost around $1565. $24.95 was about 2% of the new car cost.
National average wage in 1960 was about $4000. So $24.95 was about 0.75% of a year's wage.
The average yearly wage in 2008 was about $41,000. 0.75% of this is about $307.
The price of a replacement driver's side fender in 2005 (the latest year for this particular site) is $188.00 discounted to $68.
The used retail price of a 2008 VW Beetle hatchback is around $17,000. 2% of that is $340.
Since the difference between yearly wages 1960 versus 2008 is about 1:10, the discounted 2005 VW Beetle replacement fender is about $6.80 in 1960 dollars (with respect to average yearly wages), or less than 1/4 the 1960 price. So, the replace price of the more modern VW Beetle fender is way, WAY cheaper than it was back in 1960. This is true of almost everything except for certain types of furniture.

My statement about the parts cost comes from the point of view of someone who is restoring a clasic air-cooled VW (69 beetle convertible).

Consider me another one. Im sick of seeing men bashed all the time.Me, too. It's beyond me why advertisers think that women will rush to buy a product after seeing a commercial that bashes their husbands, fathers, brothers, and male friends.
