Apple Inc. said Monday it sold more than 300,000 iPads in the U.S., including preorders, on the first day the device was available.
The company didn't give a precise figure, but the tally was below the estimates of some analysts.
Buyers flocked to stores starting Saturday after weeks of publicity about the tablet-style computer.
Apple hadn't offered iPad sales forecasts, but over the weekend, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster more than doubled his initial first-day sales estimate to between 600,000 and 700,000 units, including preorders, based on longer-than-expected lines at stores and high expectations for online preorders. He had also lifted his 2010 forecast to 5.5 million units from 2.8 million.

I read that it was a medicore launch for Apple. outside the big cities there weren’t any lines.
It could be peopler are waiting to spend $600 to feel even more extra special. But I really am having a hard time believing there’s a big demand for this product. But then again they did it with the iPhone. Apple is apple to create demand for their products which is a pretty cool thing.

Apple has take all the innovation and convenience of the iPhone and iTouch and made it enormous and inconvenient (not to mention expensive).
I can only speak for myself, but I certainly have zero use for the iPad.
I’m taking a wait-and-see attitude on the maxiPod.
That is the initial rush of fanboy purchases. Let’s see how they continue to sell over the next three months.
That was my thoughts initially. But I can see it as a household quick internet access device, cookbook, family calendar, etc... I think the key is not to see it as a similar device as a laptop or netbook, but as a new device to access info. Business users won’t need it, but families can use it as a slate type device.
The cost is way too much for such a device but apple appears to be the one company that can overcharge for products. I just hope if this takes off someone else copies it and makes it better and more cost effective.
Well, yeah, what is unemployment compensation up to now, 57 weeks? Plenty of that "Obama money" from his stash being redistributed......at great expense to you and me, I might add.....
I see the 3g (cell phone) part of the iPad as a second source of connectivity. The primary connection will be wifi.

You still haven't figured out that you're in a CAPITALIST economy, and that Apple is a CAPITALIST company.
The cost of a product is determined by TWO things -- what the manufacturer charges, and what people are willing to pay for it. When they converge, that's the proper price for the product. Helloooo????
As long as Apple is selling the product to people who are willing to pay for it, it is not "over-priced".
You sound like a SOCIALIST -- "Down with the high-priced high-quality products of Apple! Everything should be cheap, lower quality, and less expensive so that ALL the people can buy it!!"
Apple doesn't sell to the low end of the market. Get it? They're CAPITALISTS and they address their markets for the benefit of their stockholders, who you might notice are doing quite well.

Apple won't lose money on the iPad, that's for sure. There are enough people out there who would buy a turd with an Apple logo on it, that their profit is practically guaranteed.

Sure it’s overpriced. Just because SOME people are willing to pay doesn’t mean I don’t find it overpriced.
And I believe a MAJORITY will agree with me.
