Loggers working near the Oregon coast discovered the wreckage of a World War II-era warplane in woods not far from a naval air station decommissioned in 1948, military and police officials said Thursday.
Investigators said human remains may be in the aircraft.
The origins of the Curtiss SB2C Helldiver, a U.S. Navy dive bomber, are a mystery. The crash site is not far from two naval air stations that were active during World War II.

It shouldn't take too long to find out the info. Somewhere there are records and somewhere there is a family...if they find remains in the plane.

From back during a time when ‘men were men’.
I’m truly in awe of what our country was back then.

Records may not exist about when it crashed or who was flying it.

Thanks. I agree. I’m amazed at what so many “ordinary” Americans did and sacrificed for our country and freedom back then. I think almost everybody pitched in without much complaint. People were more realistic, patriotic and pragmatic back then.
We have so many spoiled brats now.

That’s not a SB2C Helldiver. Looks to be an F8F Hellcat with a radar dome under the right wing.

Yes, I am one of the family!
My cousin John Kuhl of Palo Alto, CA took off in 1943 in a Navy plane for a navigation check. He was not heard since!
His twin brother died a few years ago without ever hearing anything about his brother. He stayed with his mother until she died. He never married. Sad story.

You know, JoeProBono, you always see John Wayne pictured when you talk about patriotism, wars- but he only played a war hero. He never served in the armed forces- although he was a champion of the Conservative cause.
James Steward was a real hero. He held the highest active military rank of any actor in history. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps and rose to the rank of colonel; after the War, he continued in the US Air Force Reserve becoming a brigadier general.
Don't get me wrong, I love John Wayne. It's just kind of ironic that he gets the glory. Guess it's because he made so many war movies.

In the book
"America's Victories", starting on page 76, is a description of the
many Hollywood actors that fought in the war. It goes on, paragraph after paragraph. For example, Ted Knight (Ted Baxter, Judge Smales), received five Bronze Stars for work in EOD. It is an amazing list.
The puny punks populating Hollywood today couldn't hump a combat infantry soldier's load up an Afghan mountain or through Baghdad's heat. Instead they make absurdly fake movies about how American soldiers are murderers.
