Vikings visited Canadian Arctic, research suggests

Artifacts suggest Norse settlement in Nunavut

BY RANDY BOSWELL, CANWEST NEWS SERVICEMAY 27, 2009

This May 26 handout photo shows a Nanook archeological site on Baffin Island. Traces of a stone-and-sod wall found at the site, if confirmed, would represent only the second location in the New World where Norse seafarers -- popularly known as Vikings -- built a dwelling. Photograph by: P. Sutherland, Canadian Museum of Civilization, Canwest News Service

One of Canada's top Arctic archeologists says the remnants of a stone-and-sod wall unearthed on southern Baffin Island may be traces of a shelter built more than 700 years ago by Norse seafarers, a stunning find that would be just the second location in the New World with evidence of a Viking-built structure.

Well, the world was warmer then. It’s cooled off considerably since.

Boy those SUV were invented long ago. That had to be the cause of global warming in order for the Vikings to have lived that far North.

Vikings visited Canadian Arctic....and their campfires were responsible for causing the Medieval Maximum cycle of Global Warm...I mean climate change.

I love this Freerepublic because all these postings I saved while surfing the net I can now find and post here for discussion.

One of them is the fact that the earth was once much warmer - so warm Greeks ran around naked and wore only a toga in the winter and the British Isles were warm enough to grow grapes for wine that was said to rival that of Gual/France in the time of the Romans.

Warm enough for Vikings to farm in Greenland and then things went cold and I think we are just emerging from that mini ice age.

Is that how you guys see it as well? If so can you suggest further reading?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Ice_Age

Tons of references at the end of the article. The Medieval Warm Period allowed farming in Greenland, but the Little Ice Age put an end to it. This is common knowledge but it doesn’t seem to stop folks some blaming human-produced CO2 for everything wrong with the climate.

Well, cold weather wouldn’t have bothered them too much seeing where they came from. They sure travelled a lot...

That's exactly how I see it. The Earf appears to go thru these cycles of warming and cooling about every 500 years or so. That was until Algore and his eco-nuts came along and started screaming the sky was falling. Now according to their flawed data and inaccurate predictions, the Earf is now warm...I mean the climate is now changing out of control and we're all going to die, unless taxes go up to help reduce the amount of plant food(CO2)in the atmosphere. Of course 30 years ago these same idiots were claiming we were heading into an ice age. Once that data didn't pan out, they started screaming Global Warming so they could keep their Federal Funding. Now that the globe is no longer warming, and only the Climate is changing; look for these loons to start predicting an ice age...to keep their federal funding. The global warming/climate change is nothing but a scam to keep getting Federal tax dollars. These people have made careers out of fear mongering and pseudoscience, they'll say anything to stay on the gravy train.

The Vikings, obviously, went green, and disposed of their coal power plants, SUVs, microwave ovens and air conditioning.

See what a differencw they made? </S>

Thanks Nikas777. There's a topic (from 2004 or 2005) around here somewhere, regarding PreColumbian Euro yarn in a northern site. And of course, L'anseceaux Meadows (sp?). Too lazy to hunt around and post 'em though, I moved office furniture for hours.

To all -- please ping me to other topics which are appropriate for the GGG list.

...The discovery of the site at L'Anse aux Meadows has not ended the debate for the location of Vinland. Viking artifacts have been found at a dozen or more sites throughout eastern Canada. The norse penny has been found as far south as Maine. The findings fit a pattern if we think of L'Anse aux Meadows as a jumping off place–a base for exploration, trade or hunting parties. They were not temporary landings. They were meant as a winter base where you could go exploring during the summer, and then return late in the fall to spend the winter here where you were safe, and then continue to Greenland the next summer. One reason they needed a base like this was that the sailing season even in the slightly warmer Eleventh Century was quite short when you have to start out from Greenland. So, if they had to go and come back to Greenland in one summer, they wouldn't have time to go much farther than that...

Correct. In the 12th Century Vikings on the west coast of Greenland grew row crops and raised livestock outdoors year round. Their valuta (walrus ivory) hunters ventured far into the high arctic searching for prey.

This is an interesting website maintained by a friend who is also a climatologist/meteorologist who debunks the junk science behind the climate change crowd.

Why not? They already had settlements in harsh climates like Iceland and Greenland.

Does the website maintained by your friend deny climate change is happening or does he state that we don’t know if it is happening but if it is more evidence points to it being cyclical (i.e natural change in weather) over man made?

Interesting hypothesis that the Vikings crossed the Northwest Passage during the Medieval Warm.

Climate was more milder then allowing them to live there. Greenland may have actually been green as in not covered in ice at the coast anyway.
