Well, the world was warmer then. It’s cooled off considerably since.
One of them is the fact that the earth was once much warmer - so warm Greeks ran around naked and wore only a toga in the winter and the British Isles were warm enough to grow grapes for wine that was said to rival that of Gual/France in the time of the Romans.
Warm enough for Vikings to farm in Greenland and then things went cold and I think we are just emerging from that mini ice age.

The Vikings, obviously, went green, and disposed of their coal power plants, SUVs, microwave ovens and air conditioning.
