Andy Warhol's portrait of Michael Jackson in his classic style has sold for over a million dollars.
The Long Island gallery owners who were auctioning off the iconic work said that the high bidder is a speculator -- not an art or music collector -- but would not reveal the buyers name.
They also did not disclose the exact price, saying only that "in a competitive battle, he paid over $1,000,000.00 for the unique work of art."
The Jackson portrraid had sold in May for $278,500 at a Sothebys auction in New York.
Warhol's highest selling portrait to date, "Lemon Marilyn" -- a portrait of another international icon -- pulled in $28,040,000 at a 2007 Christies Auction. "Green car crash -- Green burning car," broke the record for highest selling Warhol painting at the same auction, selling for $71,720,000.
The silent auction at Vered Gallery in East Hampton, N.Y., closed at 8 p.m. Tuesday night.
The start of bidding for Warhol's (Green) Michael Jackson was announced on July 16, 2009, and the painting was exhibited at the British Music Experience in the O2 Arena London, and at the Los Angeles Art Association Gallery in West Hollywood before it returned to Vered Gallery.
I could've sworn I saw this on display at the Museum of Bad Art.
And this one?
Warhol was a no-talent perv the hollyweirdos admired just for being wierd
This picture (and most others) are examples of his lack of talent. - he took a photgraph and outlined it with magic marker as far as I can see
He made so-called ‘movies’ of people doing perverted things to animals
The less i hear of him the happier I will be
and his ‘15-minutes of fame’ comment is only mildly interesting in that it has become a useful metaphor ffor people just as bad as himself
......Warhol was a no-talent perv.....
You misunderstand the business. Art is for selling. The fact it is garbage is inconsequential. The important part is to find a fool to buy. That is what the New York art scene is all about, locating fools and selling them.
For art, go to Santa Fe or Gallup or Flagstaff
I'm unaware of Warhol making “animal” films. He didn't even run the camera on many of “his” films. Often they are quite boring (long extended shots, whether they were 3 minute “screen tests” or 8 hour clips of the empire state building). And then he teamed up with the Velvet Underground to publicly screen the films at concerts as a way to try to make some money with them.
And unlike many of the art world, he regularly attended church and served at their soup kitchen. He also let him mom live with him.
Sheperd Fairey, a newer artist, has ridden the same art world to deliver us the first “15 minutes of fame” pop star president (Barack Obama). It was Mr. Fairey who gave us many of the radical posters against Bush and then the iconic prObama posts. And you can bet your bottom tax dollat that his work now WILL be inshrined in the Smithsonian. HE is far worther of contempt.
That chick with the green chest is kinda hot.
So, if MJ gets any deader, or is resurrected, this guy should make a bundle!
A million dollars for crap a moderately talented 3rd grader could turn out??!! Are there any REAL artists painting things today? Rembrandt, da Vinci, Raphael—anybody like that?? Just curious.
It’s no picture of 0bama naked with a unicorn, either.
He's actually a talented artist, but he's also a shrewd businessman.
