Joshua has been taking the bus to his local Whole Foods in New York City every five days for the past two years. This week, he said he'll go elsewhere to fulfill his fresh vegetable and organic produce needs.
"I will never shop there again," vowed Joshua, a 45-year-old blogger, who asked that his last name not be published.
Like many of his fellow health food fanatics, Joshua said he will no longer patronize the store after learning about Whole Foods Market Inc.'s CEO John Mackey's views on health care reform, which were made public this week in an op-ed piece he wrote for The Wall Street Journal.
Michael Lent, another Whole Foods enthusiast in Long Beach, Calif., told ABCNews.com that he, too, will turn to other organic groceries for his weekly shopping list.
"I'm boycotting [Whole Foods] because all Americans need health care," said Lent, 33, who used to visit his local Whole Foods "several times a week."
"While Mackey is worried about health care and stimulus spending, he doesn't seem too worried about expensive wars and tax breaks for the wealthy and big businesses such as his own that contribute to the deficit," said Lent.
In his op-ed, "The Whole Foods Alternative to ObamaCare," published Tuesday, Mackey criticized President Barack Obama's health care plan.

The Whole Paycheck CEO is not a liberal, or at least not a moonbat liberal.
When WF got rid of their live lobster tank moonbats cheered for the rights of the sea bugs, but the CEO explained that it was one of the least profitable operations in terms of overall profit, and profit per square foot, and cost in-cost out. They still sell frozen lobster products.
He said at the time (paraphrasing) that he used to use a liberal/socialist economic model but he realized he’d never have more than a few stores, so he went Western Capitalist and his business boomed. One aspect of that business is marketing toward moonbat liberals, who flock in and spend $25 a pound for “organic” eggplant or $30 for mushrooms you find free in the woods.
I shop there now, I hope the boycott spreads so the clientèle will improve and prices might come down a bit.
It’s a great store!
Hm.... so much for logic and rational thought.
I completely agree. And I love how ABC devotes the first half of the article to the angry customers and addresses those who support Mackey as an after-thought on the second page.
It also displays the liberal consumer’s hypocrisy; they’ll blow a ton of cash on their hippie-crunchy diets and then pretend to care about those who aren’t as privileged. They’re all for equality, so long as “theirs” isn’t affected.
The federal government has not business doing 90% of what it does today. It has no power under the US Constitution for almost everything it does.
We shop at Whole Foods every week in addition to our local fruit stand (we eat only local/organic produce when possible). I applaud the chairman for his dedication to both profitability and less government involvement in our lives. Kudos!
Guess with this crowd it just does not pay to try and be constructive, Mr. Mackey
Whole foods has a bit of a hippie dippie atmosphere but I will start going more often myself.
Shhhh... there are quite a few conservatives who love to indulge in the fetish of organic food, and we shop accordingly. Though I usually hit Trader Joe's instead of Whole Foods.
I love Whole Foods. They have awesome tamales in the summer and awesome baked goods all year long. They also support local produce and dairy farms.
Maybe it’s just where I live, but when GWB was in office, there were always a lot of pro-Bush bumper stickers on cars.
I have no doubt that he's every bit as liberal as you'd expect a Whole Foods CEO to be.
HOWEVER.... he's also in business, and is very successful at it. And he seems to have a clear idea of what works and does not work. He's got a very realistic view of what are the actual causes of high medical costs; and also of what Government cannot accomplish.
I highly recommend the WSJ Opinion Piece he wrote, that spurred these little hissy fits.
I used to dismiss “liberalism is a mental disease” as a gimmicky bumber sticker argument. Not any more. The fight for Obamacare has provided conclusive evidence that liberalism is indeed a psychological disorder.
Whole foods may seem to cater to the pinko element, but I love to shop there when I am close to one. Don’t forget that this man is a (shudder) successful business man as apposed to the average parasite liberal. He knows socialism doesn’t work.
It’s a 60 mile trip for me, but I might make it in the next week or two. This man is the first courageous CEO I’ve ever become aware of. Congrats to him!
How obvious is it?
Bumb for “Whole Paycheck”
