Iwas just wondering...

How did some cities(Chicago, New York, Phili, St Louis, LA, SF) and some states (IL, NY, PA, CA) get so screwed up? I mean where did they start to go wrong? Just wondering.

Takeover communism by stealth.

Why not homeschool your childredn. After all, the average homeschooled kid will be smarter than his/her ‘publicskooled’ counterpart.

That’s a fact, my kid is grown. She grew up in a time when schools were still not bad. The take over by communists happened all over the US, not just in one state and it was gradual. Home schooling is growing all the time but the liberals are aware of the danger of an educated populace and are trying to outlaw homeschooling in several states.

Certainly liberalism. I also think that TV has played a big part especially contributing to moral decay. Kids no longer fear God. Sadly, the soccer fields are full of kids on Sunday mornings. Unions keep the liberals in power and the liberals reward the unions from the public coffers.

I wish Rush and/or Sean would do a series of shows in Buffalo and Detroit to let the rest of the country know that Buffalo and Detroit is what you get when liberalsim runs its course.

We have to do a better job of educating people but unfortunately the kids are all in government run warehouses which are controled by unions.

I would like to add RINOs to the list. Arnold and Colin want Republicans to act like Demonrats in order to get more votes. TO HECK WITH THAT. I want conservatives to reclaim the republican party and that includes the social agenda as well as the sound fiscal policy which our party should but no longer stands for. Pro life to the max. Cut taxes and spending to the max. The difference between US and them must be obvious. Like Rush says, conservatism works every time its tried.

Chicago has always been a city of immigrants ... immigrants from the farms to the city, and from other counries to the USA. Since the 20’s when illegal immigration first began to exist there have always been illegal immigrants.

But I wouldn’t blame it specifically on them. The farm kids who come to the city are a process of adverse selection. Some small town kids adopt the value system of their parents and stay in the small town. But the rebels who reject traditional values leave the small town for the city, which they think is more enlightened.

For example, Obama’s comments about small towns played well near Chicago’s lakefront where so many of all colors are like him.

So the Chicago trend is 150 years. But there is more immediate causes. In the late 50s, early 60s the IL GOP was quite corrupt ... just as corrupt as the Dems. Liberal Republican Dick Ogilvie led a coalition reform movement against corruption that included conservatives, liberal Dems, 3d party types, etc. Working side by side in support of the good government coalition were anti-communist Cubans and pro-communist PuertoRicans, Anti-communist Poles and pro-communist eggheads.

This coaltion was based on the analysis that when liberal Republican Merriam ran for mayor he got 48% against Daley. Four years later conservative Republican got 48% against Daley. And there was only 20% overlap between those 48%. In 2 successive elections 76% of Chicagoans voted against Daley...just not all at the same time.

Republican Ogilvie put together the coalition. The liberal Dems supported conservative Republican Scott (until he got caught in scandal). Ogilvie carried the county for sheriff. Then the city for County Board president. Conservative Kucharski carried both the county and city. Woods carried. etc.

Ogilvie became governor. Then his liberal bias started to show. He created an income tax in addition to the hated sales tax. Even the liberal Dems did not like the income tax. The Ogilvie coalition fell apart. To try to win re-election, Ogilvie created pinstripe patronage. He gave contracts to former conservatives and good government types to support him. But it was not enough.

Good government anti-Daley Democrat won the good government coalition and both the Democrat primary over the opposition of Mayor Daley, and the general with mayor Daley supporting the losing Ogilvie.

But the Ogilvie pinstripe patronage group had during that losing campaign grabbed total control of the IL GOP aparatus. They continue to control it through today. Nixon’s/ John Mitchell’s US attorney Jim Thompson connived to get the the GOP nomination for governor and ran as a reformer with symbolism to support that claim.

During the 12 years of Repbulican Gov Jim Thompson and 8 years of Republican Gov Jim Edgar they kept an ironclad grip on the IL GOP thru control of the pinstripe patronage which they used to control the county GOP organizations. They then passed out the small patronage in both the state and county and township and village jobs.

In 1981-82 Big Jim knew he did not want to be governor for life. But he wanted to hand pick his successors so he could control everything from the outside. Both St Sen Jim Edgar and Speaker of the House George Ryan wanted to be next in line. Next in line meant controlling the patronage army in the Secretary of State’s office.

Big Jim knew that the only way the GOP won was on the image of good government. He knew George Ryan was corrupt and the media would not give Ryan the same pass they had given him. So Big Jim cut a deal. George Ryan’s people, the social conservatives, would back Little Jim to be SOS and next in line for governor with the promise that George Ryan would follow Little Jim up the ladder and Big Jim’s liberals would support George Ryan.

Thus in 1981-82 control of the IL GOP was set in stone thru 2002.

But a strange thing happened. In ‘98 Peter Fitzgerald won for US Senator and in ‘01 obtained the appointment from Dubya of corruption fighter Patrick Fitzgerald (no relation) as US Attorney over the opposition of Big Jim who had tightly controlled that position, even during the Carter and Clinton years.

Patrick Fitzgerald promptly got the convictions of people up the food chain until he got George Ryan ... and now Democrat Blago. Fitz goes after both Dems and Republicans as they are all part of the same bi-partisan combine led on the GOP side by big Jim Thompson with loyal support from the GOP central committee, the GOP National committeeman, and the key fundraisers.

The fundraising consists of the pinstripe patronage. Add 10% to contracts for money to pass around to the corrupt politicians on both sides to guarantee that the gravy train continues and nobody talks as they also have their hand in the cookie jar.

With 180+ in or on their way to jail, the GOP has been decimated. But the combine still controls the IL GOP.

the conservatives have not been able yet to put together a coalition. Rather than go after the Dems or RINOs, the conservatives get into ego fights with each other. “He didn’t return my phone call so I’m not going to work with him” type of pettiness.

Last primary, rich candidate Oberweiss was clearly flawed, but was also clearly the strongest candidate the conservatives could field. But enough conservatives supported the 3d candidate in the race to let the corrupt combine candidate win the primary. Of course, she got less support in November than carpet bagger Alan Keyes had.

This time around 8 candidates are named as potential for governor. 3 of the 8 are solid conservatives. A 4th who claims to be conservative did ads for Obama and is the person who lines up conservatives to sell their souls to the combine. Of the 3 solid conservatives, 1 probably has too much baggage from the recent past to bring unity to the conservatives, let alone to the good government voters of all ideologies. A second is a nice guy who probably can’t raise the money. And he talks like a lawyer rather than a populist in attracting a movement. the third comes straight out of the conservative/libertarian good government anti-corruption movement.

Adam An-jee-eff-ski is a successful businessman who sold his business, has a lot of money, can raise more money, and has built a resume of transparency in government and anti-corruption.

Another thing to add to the list is DEPENDENCE. The states you mentioned are big entitlement states. The governments created programs which made the people (large voting blocks) dependent on the government. I’m not in favor of term limits IF the people who vote are knowledgable and informed citizenry but they are not.

Another thing to add to the list is that our nations leaders are no longer public servants. People who lead must lead for the good of others and our nations leaders lead for the good of their political parties. Leadership is about sacrifice.

Most have hit on it in placing the blame on liberals, but the that's just the who not the why.

Let's take a once decent sized city that today, despite the dumping of millions and millions of tax dollars over decades still has parts of town that make WWII Dresden look like a model city.

Camden, NJ

In the fifties, Camden headquartered Campbell's Soup and RCA. On it's banks of the Delaware River, it had New York Shipyard, birthplace of the mighty carrier Kitty Hawk, the NS Savannah and thousands of other ships. Until 1954 and the opening of the Philadelphia International Airport, it had an airport. It had hotels, many classic movie houses and a thriving business district.

As the Democrats and their union goons became stronger, they looked on these businesses as the golden egg laying geese and they squeezed them and squeezed them till they left. Then they had no choice but to squeeze the middle class, who left too.

There are those that blame suburban flight, but more than anything, the corrupt politicians enhanced this flight and soon they too fled to the suburbs bringing their corruption with them. But they kept and still hold a strangle hold on Camden. From a political standpoint, they like the idea of keeping a plantation of people they keep poor to ensure the likes of Lautenburg and Menendez get elected.

The death of the cities in this country started with forced busing...Many middle class blacks thought it was insulting that their children couldn't learn unless they were sitting next to a white kid, they moved out...Whites didn't think it safe for their elementary school kids to be on a school bus over an hour morning and afternoon. No afterschool events, they moved out and that left only the poor blacks and whites..then the democrats had all the votes they needed..

All (100%) of these posts are correct, in one way or another, here is the simple fact that I thought about today as I was picking up my dry cleaning:

America was built on improving our lives and allowing the strong to not only survive, but thrive and prosper. The Liberal hates this as they know some people are stronger and smarter than others. The Liberal has gained power and has made mediocrity and absolute failure acceptable and achievement to be demonized as “greedy”.

They bring society down to the lowest common denominator as opposed to allowing the cream to rise to the top.

I was just in downtown Los Angeles and looked at pictures of Hope Street in the 1950’s and look at it today...would anyone ever say that is progress?

The Liberal does, his suicidal, guilt-driven psyche makes him think that “fairness” by artifically handicapping some to pay for the less talented is really “social justice”.

It is maddening.

I heard a theory about Chicago that the big fire they had in the 1800s had a big part to play in the corruption after that. Any other thoughts?

Don’t know anything about that, Interesting theory and plausable. Earliest we have on:

is:

The 1890s Chicago City Council was notorious for corrupt political practices orchestrated by a faction of its aldermen known as the Gray Wolves. So named because they were viewed as preying upon the defenseless public, the Gray Wolves were led by First Ward aldermen “Bathhouse” John Coughlin and “Hinky Dink” Mike Kenna, and Johnny Powers of the Nineteenth Ward. These elected officials were not only skilled at trading votes for favors, but once in office they excelled in making municipal decisions to profit themselves financially.
