Weekly Gardening Thread
This is typically a low volume ping list. Once a week for the thread and every once in a while for other FR threads posted that might be of interest.
If you would like to be added to or removed from the list please let me know by FreepMail or by posting to me.
Oh, meant to say thanks for the ping and thread.
What a great plant!
My report from S. Utah...
Tomato plants have started to set fruit. The pots are now on the east side of the house. In a few weeks, they will be in full shade, due to the heat. (In S. Utah, planting tomatoes in the ground is a guaranteed dead end to tomatoes, it’s too hot and too sunny.)
Strawberries and raspberries (also in pots and on the east side) are on steroids.
Columbines are the toughest little plants ever. My landlord cannot believe how well they do here. They are from Washington State and never considered planting them in the desert. lol But they are very happy sitting under my apricot tree, blooming away!
Ping fer later- thanks.
Lower Hudson Valley - NY
Got my 30 tomato(e) plants, 45 pepper plants of various varieties, red & white onions and a few shallots started.
Does anyone have any experience with garlic? I ordered some and found out it was too hot down here in SC and read that it should be planted in fall. I left it unwrapped in a box and the bulbs still look good but the odor is getting really strong. Should I plant the bulbs anyway or just forget it and use them for cooking?
My tomatoes are starting out REALLY, REALLY slow. I started them at the beginning of April and they just stayed runty little things.
I planted them outdoors, thinking that it would help them grow better, and have not seem much progress and we’ve had warm and wet weather.
Are some varieties just slow starters? They’re Italian plum tomatoes for sauce.
Mornin’ all! I’ll be in and out as usual. :) Daughter is sposed to go in the hosp today and they’re going to induce labor. I actually got a day off from the garden center and I have TONS of stuff I want/need to get done in the garden/yard but I doubt I’ll get to any of them.
The heat and the bugs are here to stay, along with the weeds. We got the last of our broccoli plants disced in and planted peanuts yest. As soon as we pull the vidalias and peas, we’re going to plant lima beans—Jackson Wonder and Early thorogreen- and I got some Taylor Horticultural beans to plant, and some Dixie Lee field peas. In another week or so, the weeds will have completely taken over. LOL We both work full time, and what little we get done is after work and before the bugs drive us inside!
Y’all have a great day!
I had started some really strong-looking Pink Oxheart tomatoes indoors and transplanted them outside, only to have the local bird life peck them to pieces. I'm not sure what it is about small tomato plants that attracts birds, but these poor seedlings were not long for this world.
We already pulled the first batch of radishes and will be replanting this weekend.
Tonight’s dinner will feature the first of the chard and squash.
Peppers, tomatoes, squash, eggplant, beans are all producing at this point and flowering.
Good Morning! Here’s my list for today, because I have the day OFF, and the weather looks cooperative, though we might get a quick shower this morning.
* Adding a ‘Sweet Autumn’ clematis to grow up and over the greenhouse. Fall-blooming, very fragrant.
* Adding ‘Heavenly Blue’ Morning Glories to the trellis where my Golden Hops Vine lives. I think the chartreuse and bright blue will look cool together.
* Moving my (too many!) geraniums outside for the summer.
* Planting tomatoes, peppers, squash and some flowers today; all plants are ready to go and sick of being in pots. (They told me that, LOL!)
* Adding basil and nasturtiums to my smaller garden bed. My two youngest (4 & 6) nephews are coming over today to ‘help’ with that. ;)
* Planting three White Cedar (arborvitae) and a White Pine, as well as three White Birch to the yard. Got those FREE from my in-laws; we get the leftovers at the end of Tree Sale Season. That’ll put us at 110 trees planted in 10 years. Screw the EnviroWeenies, LOL!
That should keep me good and dirty all day. :)
Good Morning everyone :)
My garden is sprouting all over after warm days and rain.
For the heck of it I tried putting some taters in and they came up!!
Got all my tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant in, just got tomatillos, groundcherries and other oddball tomato relatives left.
Spring stuff looks good for the most part, summer stuff germinating pretty well.
Lots of weeding and staking on tap for next week.
Lived here three years, this is an odd spring, but statistically may be more normal as there has been drought since I lived here - first spring officially out of drought.
We got through Mother’s Day without a hailstorm, a first for me.
We are moving, so I am digging up things - this includes about 200 rose bushes. Some are moving with me, some are being discarded and some are going to live with others. I’m also digging up a lot of other plants. The place looks like a wholesale nursery right now.
Started three kinds of tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers in the little greenhouse. Hubby added water and heat and they really got off to a good start. Interesting to see how the tomatoes do since it is so much wetter and cooler.
Started a bunch of flowers from seeds also - got surprisingly good results.
Some new dahlias this year that are standing up straight and are already blooming (in pots which may be the secret). My MIL lives with us - loves those dahlias. The ones I planted in the ground, fell over and crawled around like vines. I guess they need more support that I offered.
Went camping up in the mountains in TN several weeks ago - waterfall down in a gorge. The rock walls around the river were covered with hundreds of the fern leafed bleeding hearts. It was glorious to see.
I had a scare this week. The tomatoes I started indoors were gradually moved for longer periods onto the back deck. I have planted a few and am leaving the rest on the deck all day and night. The other day I went to bed and the temperature here in zone 4, 8500 ft elevation in the Colorado Rockies was in the mid 40’s. When I woke up the next morning the temps had plummited and there was frost covering my deck. My digital outdoor thermometer showed it had gotten down to 31F. Luckily the tomatoes were close enough to the sliding glass doors that they stayed above freezing and the ones I planted somehow survived too! I have those extra 4th of July tomatoe seeds that I can send you for next year’s garden. Will let you know how mine do.
well, my garden consists of 3 bush beans that i planted in a pot. One of them came up, then the rain came. An estimated 28 inches of rain in a week! now, i noticed, though that a second one of the beans has made it up thru the ground. :) i think i planted them 2 weeks ago, but i don’t remember. You’re supposed to plant stuff here in january or february, i think.
Hey, I know it’s late in the thread, but here’s my garden:

Love gardening advice. I'm out there everyday enjoying the Creation.
Living in the fruit & veggie capital of America, the San Joaquin Valley, we are already enjoying some of the harvest. Started planting in late February. I put in boxed beds in a special area of the garden... will have to take a photo as it is fantastic. I have a little bit of everything... from flameglo grapes to 'stipey' tomatoes. My strawberries didn't do so well. Discovered you have to plant them on hills to produce properly. Looking forward to more threads.
