Are pinto beans healthy?
me

Posted on 05/14/2009 3:58:17 PM PDT by housemouse 1

My family is on a pinto bean diet, i'll call it that because money tight and this is all we have to eat, well rice, and homemade tortillas, but even those few inbetween times we can have eggs, cheese, fruit, vegtables, it's mostly beans, i make plain, and chili version, leftovers become soup, my kids think we are going to die, what i'd like to hear is what someone else thinks?

Why limit yourself to Pinto beans? Northern beans and Navy beans are also good especially when cooked with some ham or other pork.

I think beans tend to cause less gas if they are well cooked.

Are you anywhere near Nashville and can I come over for dinner once in a while?

Pinto beans are very healthful! The Mr. and I eat homemade burritos all the time. (Homemade tortillas!? — I’m really impressed, they’re so much tastier.) Cilantro is a great herb to add to anything in a tortilla. Keep it sown in a sunny spot in the earth or in a pot.

We eat a ton of pinto beans too.
Have you tried bean enchiladas? I have a great recipe, along with one for homemade enchilada sauce if you’re interested.

My husband’s hispanic, so I have learned quite a few recipes that center around Pinto beans.

You might try making a ‘bean dip’ for the kids.

Just mash them into a paste and serve.

"I think I’m going for some Mexican food tonight.. that made me hungry."

I just ate five home made tacos, hmmm. I haven't made tacos since 1985.

I was born in 1941 and as a child growing up in the country,
we had pinto beans twice a day at least 5 days a week. A lot
of the time beans, cornbread and whatever homegrown or canned
vegetables we had were our main meal. We very seldom ever had meat
unless my brother went hunting and got a rabbit or some birds. If one of the hens
quit laying, we’d have roasted chicken for one meal and chicken and dumplins for another. I also remember lots of evening meals of cornbread and milk.
We had black eyed peas and butter beans in place of pintos sometimes.
There were 5 kids in our family and we all grew up healthy and energetic.
I still eat lots of beans.

I have to respectfully disagree - ounce for ounce Spam is far more expensive than chicken, and far less nutritious. Spam is several dollars a pound - in most areas you can still buy a whole chicken which you can cut up yourself for well under a dollar a pound.

If it’s really the Great Depression again, we can’t overlook any food source!

But you will probably be gassy and be sure not to eat too much.

Maybe if you eat beans once a year they'll give you some digestive issues but with a regular diet of legumes farting is not a problem.

>>>While SPAM isn’t normally considered gourmet fare

There’s a Garlic Spam... and a variety with built-in Tabasco Sauce... not to mention Bacon Spam, and Cheese Spam too. The Garlic in a pasta salad is quite good.

You are paying for the bones and skin too, but you don’t eat them.

We eat beans at least twice a week.

I dispute your claim. :)
