Are pinto beans healthy?
me

Posted on 05/14/2009 3:58:17 PM PDT by housemouse 1

My family is on a pinto bean diet, i'll call it that because money tight and this is all we have to eat, well rice, and homemade tortillas, but even those few inbetween times we can have eggs, cheese, fruit, vegtables, it's mostly beans, i make plain, and chili version, leftovers become soup, my kids think we are going to die, what i'd like to hear is what someone else thinks?

I think legumes in general are one of the healthiest things you can eat. Be sure to pair it with rice so you get your full complex proteins.

Yes, pinto beans are very healthy, but you will contribute a lot of greenhouse gases after consuming them.

Give the kids rice and water for two days and beans will begin to look like a banquet.

Time to plant a garden.

I think beans are pretty healthy. I’ve also heard that a combination of milk + potatoes (probably w/ skins on) provides pretty much all the nutrients you need.

I love pinto beans, especially seasoned with coriander and cumin. Wrapped in a tortilla with pico de gallo and some chopped up carne asada and cheese. Nuthin better.

Years ago I planted pinto beans for the ‘green beans’. Good and easy to grow but you have to pull the stem string on each bean. They are large so it’s not hard.

Different kinds of beans and peas have a variety of nutrients, so don’t just use pintos, if you can avoid it. All dried beans, especially in bulk quantities, are quite inexpensive.

Beans are an excellent source of nutrition...tell the kids to suck it up...at least they won’t wind up with type 2 diabetes eating the crap that most other kids eat.

I read an article years ago that explained how some cultures who don’t eat what we eat stay healthy. Mexico: is was the combination of beans and rice which did the trick.

All the ingredients you mentioned are actually very good for your health and it sounds as if you’re doing a terrific job of feeding your family good, quality food on a tight budget. Do try to combine the beans with rice to provide a complete protein, evey bit as nutritious as a serving of meat protein. Hang in there and keep up the good work. You sound like a terrific mom. A belated Happy Mother’s Day to you!

P.S. Tell your children to the best of my knowledge there are no recorded deaths from lack of McDonalds Happy Meals, Cokes or potato chips.

Some of he healthiest foods are also the lower priced foods.. You can eat rather well both nutritionally as well as financially, if you ‘walk the perimeter’ of the store (ie, avoid processed foods)..

Google some Indian recipes.. they have a lot of creative uses of beans and some great flavor.

You are not going to die. But you will probably be gassy and be sure not to eat too much. They can bind you up horribly.

The rice and the corn will help prevent that.
