Are pinto beans healthy?
me

Posted on 05/14/2009 3:58:17 PM PDT by housemouse 1

My family is on a pinto bean diet, i'll call it that because money tight and this is all we have to eat, well rice, and homemade tortillas, but even those few inbetween times we can have eggs, cheese, fruit, vegtables, it's mostly beans, i make plain, and chili version, leftovers become soup, my kids think we are going to die, what i'd like to hear is what someone else thinks?

farting is not a problem

Not only is it not a problem, it's a source of inexpensive entertainment for those on a budget.

My point was really that SPAM with it’s salt and fat cooks well with the beans. It flavors them nicely. Frankly I’ve never considered cooking pinto beans with chicken, but it doesn’t sound bad at all. Any tips (bone, shread..)?

Beans and rice are NOT healthy if your family is prone to diabetes.

I hope mine never wise up; it would upset the finely honed equilibrium of my recipes and shopping list terribly.

Practically anything goes with cornbread, I think. I like it
with chili, roast gravy, stews and sometimes with just butter.
One of my grandmother’s favorite meals was okra gumbo and cornbread.
Umm mmmm makes me hungry!

I love black-eyed peas, canned tomatoes and cornbread for supper. Navy beans are a good substitute for the black-eyed peas. Onions are good on the side.

I used to always get red beans and rice in New Orleans. I’ve never made that, but I am going to next week for a large group. In fact, everyone is bringing some form of beans and rice.

Corn meal mush is wonderful.

You can make syrup with sugar water & maple flavoring or some kind of flavoring.

I also remember bean soup. Any kind of soup. With saltines. Great stuff. Still eat it.

Growing up in small town Southwest, my Mom always kept a pot of pinto beans on the stove. She cooked it with salt pork or ham bone if we had it. A favorite dish of mine was just a bowl of beans with with the following added fresh and usually home grown. Diced tomatoes, diced onion, chopped fresh cilantro and thinly sliced jalapeno. To top it off, some crumbled goat cheese or diced longhorn cheese. Home made tortillas finished it off.

My wife makes it on occasion now but it is way more expensive as we are too far North for most year around gardens and beans cost a lot more than the 4 cents a pound I remember.

Ha.

No need to pray for my family. We eat real meat with our chili beans. Unless it’s stir fry night. Then we eat real meat with our rice.

BTW, my “family” consists of me and my red lab.

Lots of people have suggested combining beans with rice. I’d just like to point out there are a good many other grains that provide similar complementarity. My family especially enjoys bulgur wheat, which has the neat benefit that it doesn’t even need cooking, if you’re really trying to save energy and therefore money.

Corn can also be prepared as polenta and served as a base for spiced-up beans.

Love them Pinto Beans.

The venison I don’t have cut into steaks I have ground with jalapeno’s and bacon. When I make Pinto beans I usually throw in a pound of the venison mix a can of Rotel hot and a teaspoon of yellow mustard. Cook them down until they’re nice and thick. Good stuff.

One of my favorite meals is to chop up a whole chicken, season with S&P, maybe a little oregano and fresh garlic, and saute in oil, EVOO if you have it, until browned, cooked through and delicious, I cheat and cook a packet of yellow rice (I like Mahatma; some prefer Vigo) and couple with this wonderful refried pintos recipe:

That is a cinematical historical moment.

That scene right there is the 1st incidence of movie censors allowing farts to be heard and the results expressed on film. The story was, during the pre-release screening of the film the film board people were laughing so hard at that scene it just didn't occur to them to ask for it to be cut.
Thus, movie history was made.
Heck, it an all-American moment. You got cowboys, campfires, food and farts. Better than a Trifecta!

Now you have me thinking about the Ford Pinto. The most hideous car of all time IMO.

They erupted in flames in rear-end collisions which earned them a spot on the ‘50 worst cars if all time’ list. After all, what did they expect when naming a car after a legume.
