Sorry to post a vanity but looking for some suggestions about acid reflux. It could just be heartburn too???? I never had any problems but entering mid to late 40's this just popped up. Supposedly as we move into the 50's this becomes an issue.

I’ve been popping antacids everyday for over 50 years. Zantac works good for me. I believe there are some serious side effects issues with Prilosec.

Please see a doctor. I knew a guy who had this and was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Don’t eat within two or three hours of lying down to sleep. Don’t sleep flat on your back. Keep your upper body inclined. The esophageal sphincter is not as tight as the gastric sphincter. Don’t overtax it by a bad position.

I've had this problem for years. Back before I regained health insurance, I treated it with over the counter stuff. Tagamet gave me headaches, so I went to Pepcid. After that stopped working in about 9-12 months, I switched to Zantac. That worked for awhile, then I went to Prilosec OTC, but it made me constipated.

Then I got health insurance, and on my first visit, my doctor gave me samples of Protonix. That was about three years ago, and the stuff works great. The only times I've had a problem is when I forget to take one (being on vacation, and out of one's routine does that) or when I've seriously indulged too close to bedtime. My lady bought me a recliner about a year ago that we call my "acid reflux chair" for when I really go over the edge on 'overserving' myself.

Generally, though, the stuff's been a wonder drug, and in about a year and a half, the patent will expire, and it's probably going to get really cheap.

See a gastroenterologist. Now. An exam with an endoscope is very fast and painless. I know. I had one this morning. The doctor found a small hiatal hernia and grade c esophagitis. He also stretched open a stricture where the esophagus leads into the stomach. But he found nothing suspicious that might suggest cancer. That’s a relief!

I’ll have special medication, but a lot of the treatment is just plain common sense. No smoking, cut way back on fried foods, no cola or caffeine drinks, eat several small meals daily and eat nothing after 6:00 PM. I’m supposed to elevate the head of my bed four inches, but I haven’t done that yet.

You’re right to worry about esophageal cancer. That’s why you should get your GERD under control now.

I developed psuedo-asthma from aspirating acid reflux due to acute apnea

Prilosec morning and evening cured it

OK Here is my and my wifes remedy.

After suffering for years, and trying almost ALL of the above remedies, what REAL WORKED for her is "papaya".

Yup, it is sold in heath food stores as a "aid to digestion". It comes in these little tablets you just chew with a bit of water. I believe they help by allowing the bodies natural enzymes to be "boosted" which speeds/facilitates digestion. Costs about $18 for a bottle of 500. Pretty hard to beat, I take 4 after meals. It really works, and no medicine!! It is a natural enzyme.

still LOL...
It did become the family joke for a few years!!!

but it is a true story...we had an adopted son who was 3 years old, and we tried all fertility pills, surgery and etc. but finally just gave up, until an older lady told me to try “apple cider vinegar” we produced a great baby girl who is now 33 yrs old!!!! so I'm a firm believer in apple cider vinegar....

I used to have GERD (that’s the proper term to use for Google searches) but by doing much of what’s mentioned, it went away.
Here’s my list:
Raise the head of the bed 6-8 inches.
Got a memory foam mattress topper—I no longer toss and turn which tosses the acid around.
Sleep on left side.
No food 4 hours before bed.
I also took chewable enzyme (super papaya) tablets to help digest fatty meals.
==
To relieve the burn, I found DGL (short for Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice) at the health food store—very soothing.
Another soother is Ginger root juice. Google that and GERD to get the dosage.

Thanks and thanks to all for all the great posts! I have read them all plus the emails. This is great info for all FR members. I love FR for the great info. I wish we had Sarah as President so this web site would be more social and less crisis reporting. Always great info from FR members. :-)

I will probably have the doc do both ends because they cancombine them.

Note to others as they get in their late 40s and 50. Colonoscopy. Very important and very treatable but most people do not check it. Colon cancer is a big killer and is easily caught and handled if you have it checked.

I am not for Hillarycare but this procedure saves a lot of lives. the way the teleprompter is spending money - the $900 for Hamas, $5 billion of the Obama Hitler youth & $30 + billion for free illegal healthcare would be better spent on coloscopies for Americans.

Thanks again.

actually Prilosec is Omeprazole which is a combination of Esomeprazole and Romeprazole

Nexium is pure Esomeprazole....

very close but not the same..

Thanks.

Whenever I feel under the weather, I eat a bowl of chili. It always cures the nasties for me.

Tums is actually good for you. Has calcium in it, which is healthy for you.

Listen — when I have it bad, I take a level tablespoon of baking soda mixed with a cup or more of water. Kills the pain INSTANTLY. Seriously — check your Arm & Hammer box to confirm that you can use it as an antacid. It’s my go-to for putting a QUICK stop to stomach acid pain.

Dr. Stoll would say the underlying cause of your GERD is LGS (leaky gut syndrome). He recommends ginger juice but says you need to treat the underlying LGS (leaky gut syndrome) by a whole foods diet, exercise and skilled relaxation. LGS is primarily caused by poor diet and mostly by our highly stressful lifestyle. If you only do one of these three things, the most important is skilled relaxation.

He is a really great doctor, IMO (way out lib, but he’s so great I forgive him). Here’s a link to his archives on GERD:

Hope you get a handle on this feel better soon.

Mine’s under control, and almost gone. Between eating less acidic foods, and using lactose free milk, I’m good to go.
