Simple food choices go a long way when it comes to your heart's health. Focusing on fresh foods full of heart-healthy fats and antioxidants can decrease your risk of developing heart disease and cut your chances of a heart attack.

These 10 foods will help keep your ticker in top shape. Oatmeal Start your day with a steaming bowl of oats, which are full of omega-3 fatty acids, folate, and potassium. This fiber-rich superfood can lower levels of LDL (or bad) cholesterol and help keep arteries clear. Opt for coarse or steel-cut oats over instant varieties -- the coarse and steel-cut contain more fiber -- and top your bowl off with a banana for another four grams of fiber.

Salmon Super-rich in omega-3 fatty acids, salmon can effectively reduce blood pressure and keep clotting at bay. Aim for two servings per week, which may reduce your risk of dying of a heart attack by up to one-third. "Salmon contains the carotenoid astaxanthin, which is a very powerful antioxidant," says cardiologist Stephen T. Sinatra, MD, the author of "Lower Your Blood Pressure In Eight Weeks." But be sure to choose wild salmon over farm-raised fish, which can be packed with insecticides, pesticides, and heavy metals. Not a fan of salmon? Other oily fish like mackerel, tuna, herring, and sardines will give your heart the same boost.

Avocado Add a bit of avocado to a sandwich or spinach salad to increase the amount of heart-healthy fats in your diet. Steel Cut Oatmeal for the Crock Pot(^)

Package the rest, store it in the fridge, nuke it in the morning. Voila! Days and days worth of oatmeal.

Feh. I mix together Quaker Old Fashioned Oats, All-Bran, Steel Cut Oats in a bowl; add a sccop Garden of Life Perfect Food, 1 oz of Pomegranate Juice Concentrate, and sprinkle on ground flaxseed and wheat germ.

Add skim milk and blueberries, and eat raw!

If I'm really feeling fetishistic, I add olive oil...

Yes, my kids think I'm nuts.

A lot of the strain on the heart happens from pre-diabetic and diabetic conditions, and kidney stress. Within the last few weeks it has been learned that a lot of this stress can be alleviated by taking 300 mg of ordinary Vitamin B-1 (Thiamine) a day for three months. An excellent idea not just for diabetics.

Link, please? And can one purchase thiamine without it being complexed with the other B-vitamins?

Make it in your crock pot the night before.

Use milk or buttermilk for the liquid and toss in some nuts and dried berries. Leave it on low.

8 hours later it is creamy and tasty.

I’m thinking the capsules might be good for cataracts, too. Two years ago, my cataracts had progressed quite a bit. For another reason, I began taking fish oil capsules every day. Last week at my cataracts checkup, they hadn’t become any worse over two years. Doctor seemed surprised, even though he had told me that eathing fish was very healthy for eyes. (FWIW...)

Yes, B-1 is widely available individually. Typically in 100mg pills, so this would be three a day.

As an aside, a commonly prescribed diabetes drug called Metformin has been associated with B-12 deficiency:

“According to some studies, between 10% and 30% of people who take metformin on a regular basis have some evidence of decreased B12 absorption. Researchers aren’t quite sure why this happens.”

Don’t do oatmeal (the smell - blech), salmon, flaxseed or soy. Avocados, olive oil and berries daily if I could. Legumes, yes. The other two yes.

Two tortillas sandwiched around sliced (or shredded) cheese and slices of pepperoni.

Pre-heat a lightly oiled skillet and “toast” the quesadilla turning it once — rather like making a grilled cheese sandwich.

The tortillas get crispy, the cheese melts and pepperoni kinda bubbles a little. Probably not heart healthy but mighty tasty!

Doesn't even need salsa.

I’m thinking multiple sugar alcohol, imitation artificial maple flavored, tree sap and tree sap byproduct, artificial color, odor and viscosity, water and synthetic stabilizers and preservatives. Do not store where product would be in direct sunlight or strong magnetic fields.

I have found that the new steelhead river farmed salmon is quite tasty and has good texture, as well. I’m so sick of the tribes and the salmon protection, that I am promoting the river farmed fish.
