Scientists Find Cause Of Gray Hair

Stanford, CA (AHN) - European scientists have found that four enzymes cause hair to turn gray. The breakthrough findings introduce leads on how to stop hair from graying.

The researchers from the Universities of Bradford, Mainz and Luebeck, whose findings are published in the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology's journal, found that lack of the enzyme catalase causes the build up of hydrogen peroxide, which blocks the production of the enzyme tyrosinase. Tyrosinase produces melanin, the hair's natural pigment.

There is also a reduction of repair enzymes A and B preventing hair follicles from repairing the damage caused by the build up of hydrogen peroxide.

"This discovery is a major breakthrough in the understanding of hair greying and opens up some novel ideas to combat this scenario. These are being followed up at the current time in our laboratory," said lead researcher, Karin Schallreuter, a professor of clinical and experimental dermatology at England's University of Bradford.

Thank G-d these scientists aren’t wasting their time looking for something like a cure for cancer or AIDS.

My wife is being given an experimental drug at Ohio State for Leukemia. She had some gray hair before but now it is all brown. I told the doctor they ought to find out how it happened and maybe they can market it. Her hair is also thicker than before.

I think it’s specifically the B vitamins that do it.

This is a song I wrote for my 50th birthday, but I just change the age and it will still work on Saturday for my 56th:

WHO'LL STOP THE GRAY?
Tune: "Who'll Stop the Rain?"

Long as I remember,
I've looked thirty-three.
I hear the waitress sayin',
"Must see some ID."
Who can guess my age is
Fifty-six today?
And I wonder,
Still I wonder:
Who'll spot the gray?

Won't do Grecian Form'la,
And I don't want Just For Men.
I can say the white hairs
Are blond ones just mixed in.
Still the gray keeps comin',
More and more each day,
And I wonder,
Still I wonder:
Who'll stop the gray?

Tried to trim the white ones
Out of my goatee,
But if I shave it all off,
I'll look seventeen!
Still the gray keeps comin'--
Make it go away!
And I wonder,
Still I wonder:
Who'll stop the gray?

Excellent, Charles. I wish I could get gray hair. The gray ones just fall out. And I suspect more and more are migrating south.

I really should read the whole stimulus package to see if there's any money for hair plugs in there.

Biden might've been involved, so who knows?

Yep, where is the cure for hair falling out? I know both men and women who are losing hair and none of the medications. I recall reading long ago of a man in South Africa who claimed that rubbing the head with an onion caused his hair to regrow. Allegedly his hair actually came back. Another theory hold that reducing stress is the secret. I vote for genes.

I was taking mineral/vitamin pills before, during and after my hair turned gray. But I like the gray anyway.

They’ll probably cure grey hair before they cure teenagers.
