European Neanderthals had ginger hair and freckles [ and Type O blood ]
Telegraph ^ | December 29, 2008 | Edward Owen

Posted on 12/30/2008 8:17:45 PM PST by SunkenCiv

The gene known as MC1R suggests the Neanderthals had fair skin and even freckles like redheads. After analysing the fossil bones found in a cave in north-west Spain, the experts concluded they had human blood group "O" and were genetically more likely to be fair skinned, perhaps even with freckles, have red or ginger hair and could talk... The report, published in BMC Evolutionary Biology, concludes that: "These results suggest the genetic change responsible for the O blood group in humans predates the human and Neanderthal divergence" but came "after humans separated from their common ancestor ... chimpanzees." ...One gene known as MC1R suggests the Neanderthals had fair skin and even freckles like redheads. Another, a variety of FOXP2, is related to speaking and the capacity to create a language and therefore suggests they could communicate orally... Since 2000, archeo-paleontologists, wearing special sealed white suits, masks and helmets have been painstakingly sifting through 1,500 bone fragments found in the "Tunnel of Bones" in the Sidrón cave complex in Borines, Asturias, north-west Spain. Unnatural striations in the bones suggest that the Neanderthals practised cannibalism and broke the bones to pick out succulent bone marrow. But why this group died, without wild animals discovering and contaminating their remains, or why indeed the Neanderthals in general became extinct, still remains a mystery... One theory is that they succumbed to an ice age or another, more sinister, is that they were wiped out by the arrival of our more direct human ancestors from Africa.

It’s 40/40/15/5 (other than the pretty small number with MN, and probably even smaller number with some freaky stuff but who are otherwise in the ABO system).

As someone up there noted, the complication you may be thinking of is due to Rh factor incompatibility; I actually know a family where the mom’s firstborn child wound up slightly developmentally disabled because of blood mingling at birth and the Rh didn’t match.

> Did crossbreeding with other than O blood types cause extinction of neanderthal female species

That’s actually something that didn’t cross my tiny little mind — that Type O might be another legacy of Neandertal. Now that you bring it up, Captain Obvious just smacked me in the back of the head. ;’)

LOL! Nice-looking dog. I have to admit, though, on the other hand, I have a much-stronger weakness for red-headed women. ;-)

I was about to complain about the red hair and brown eyes thing, till I saw your post.
Where'd you find my graduation picture?

Geez. does that mean, as I am O negative, that I am a direct descendant of Neanderthals?

you know I went back and looked into it, and we are both right, only I forgot (senior moment) to add RH into my argument.

Rh is the worse of the two it seems, although the jaundice caused by ABO incompatibility can lead to further complications if there’s no way to treat it.

I think both Rh and ABO compatibility would be important.

Thanks again for pointing out the RH factor too!

best regards, blu

thinking of type O as a legacy, ping to Post 7 map of type O, consider the expanding-earth theory, and voila - neantherthals in africa, all the way up to the Artic Regions.

Thanks, FRiend, for helping me learn :)

best regards, blu

GENOME
the autobiography of
a species in 23 chapters

by Matt Ridley
(from chap 9)
The different kind blood group you have determines your susceptibility to certain diseases. For example, people with A blood are less likely to get diarrhoea than people with B blood. People with O blood are more susceptible to getting diarrhoea than anybody else. People with AB blood are virtually immune to diarrhoea because of their resistance. Nobody really yet knows how AB genotype protects them from this disease. "Since people with the O blood are the most susceptible to the disease, shouldn't they die out according to natural selection?' you are probably asking. That is true but there are a couple of things that keep the O group alive and one of them is malaria. People with O blood are more resistant to malaria than other groups. Another thing is that the O group is less likely to get certain cancers. These benefits cancel out the negative effect that the O blood group has on the diarrhoea disease so, this balance has kept the group from disappearing.
