World's Oldest Cooked Cereal Was Instant

Dating from between 5920 to 5730 B.C., the ancient cereal consisted of parboiled bulgur wheat that Early Neolithic Bulgarians could refresh in minutes with hot water.

"People boiled the grain, dried it, removed the bran and ground it into coarse particles," lead author Soultana-Maria Valamoti told Discovery News.

"In this form, the cereal grain can be stored throughout the year and consumed easily, even without boiling, by merely soaking in hot water," added Valamoti, an assistant professor of archaeology at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece.

She and her colleagues studied the Bulgarian grain, excavated at a site called Kapitan Dimitrievo, as well as 4,000-year-old grains of barley and wheat from northern Greece. Very high magnification by microscope revealed precise details about the individual cereal grains, including their composition.

The findings are published in the latest issue of the journal Vegetation History and Archaeobotany.

I hope their instant bulgar was better than instant mashed potatoes.

"People boiled the grain, dried it, removed the bran and ground it into coarse particles,"

How do those people know it was meant to eat? It appears like something to ferment. And distill!

Lot of folks consider oatmeal to be kinda - well - plebian.

But the truth is, oatmeal is very, very, very good for you.
And you are right! A little butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon, that stuff will stick to your ribs for hours! Very satisfying.

Oatmeal is good. I add raisins, banana slices, apple slices, wheat germ, a dash of salt...heck, just about anything I can reach in the kitchen when I'm making it.

Its all good with oatmeal.

I like my oats with a good ladle full of stewed meat, some broth and lots of salt and pepper.

I actually use rolled oats as a thickener/texturizer in various soups and stews.

It’s fairly flavor neutral like that.

Interesting use of oats. Never thought of using it that way. Would Quaker Instant work?

I imagine it could.

But all the Quaker instant I ever saw is fruit-flavored.

I mean the 1 minute plain instant that comes in the cardboard cylinder tube thing. That’s what I eat since the non instant takes to long for a single guy like me.
