Fluoride is a common constituent of groundwater.

There's a BIG difference between man-made Fluoride and naturally occurring Fluoride -

Feels like I am back in the Eisenhower era with the John Birch Society. Flouride has shown through extensive testing that it is not harmful and provides great benefits to children’s teeth.

Hi "Rott" - I get the same thing whenever I mention I have my own well. They always seem to assume we are too dumb to know about testing our water -

I'd refer them to the studies of the uber expensive bottled waters that so many buy. Besides what is finally coming about the chemicals that leach into it from the plastic bottles, most of bottled waters are merely recycled tap water from our major cities, like LA, Denver and Jacksonville. Both Disani and Aquafina are from those city taps. Add to that, a lot of those cities drinking water is recycled from waste water - sewage - and still contains high levels of prescription drugs, birth control pills, etc.

I'll take my well water any day.

hint - if you DO use bottled water, look for the source of the water. If it doesn't say "spring water' it's city tap water. Funny part is, spring water is much cheaper.

I guess I'm one of the few who believe in limited government and personal responsibility. It should be the parents job to care for their children's teeth, not Uncle Sam's.

I don’t disagree with that one bit. I wasn’t defending it’s addition to the water supply, I was arguing that flouride has benefits and is not harmful. In fact, adding it to the water supply is probably pointless these days anyway since so few people drink water, especially from the tap.

I remember reading that there was a deal made to get rid of the large amount of man-made by-product of some manufacturing process (?) ~ fluoride, by selling the idea of health benefits of adding it to public water supplies. There was no place for this company to dispose of their huge amount of fluoride. Don’t have the source, but I remember reading it online somewhere. I use toothpaste without fluoride now. Tom’s of Maine.

I don’t believe Brita filters fluoride anyway. It doesn’t filter chlorine either as far as I know.

yep

I use Thom's of Maine too - and other tooth powders - they've brought powders back...I use the ones with myrrh = an ancient and efficient germ killer - there's a reason it was so highly valued 2000 years ago.

I grew up in Maine. There’s a short list of things I still like and miss about the place. The Fryburg Fair, the Balloon Festival in Auburn, LL Bean, Georgio’s Pizza, the shops in the Old Port, Italian sandwiches, and those cookies made with potato covered in chocolate that taste like they’re made with coconut! I miss Captain Newick’s too, but I hear they closed. Great seafood, and lots of it on paper plates!

I noted on Dr. Hensley’s clip you posted that there is no mention of thousands of people suffering because of fl- added to the drinking water. Actually the clip does not identify one person harmed. Therefore, it is a total fear clip just like Oboma puts out fear to scare the voter. This is your clip and not one person harmed by fl- in the clip.

Any time well water is mentioned testing should be included. You never know if someone reading a post needs to test a well. This may save someones life.

There is a difference between blame the dentist (which is doubtful) and the fl- added to the drinking water. Your reasoning assumes that damage inflicted by the dentist is because the dentist add fl- to the drinking water.

Agreed. I was only telling you that groundwater already has fluoride in it.

Uhhh - ever been to Vietnam? No flouride in the water, and lots of people has rotten black teeth, or no teeth at all.

Yep, been there. The black teeth you saw was the result of chewing beetlenut (sp?). A mild tranquilizer that many, many of the country folk chewed... (gross!)

I don't know where to start...the same old hysteria all over again. There are plenty of places in this country that have naturally occurring fluoride in the groundwater. Optimum fluoridation levels for public water systems are .7-1 ppm(parts per million). Higher levels will probably cause mottled enamel. They're finding out now that many cases of mottled enamel are not due to fluorosis, but overuse of the antibiotic Amoxicillin. The reason they warn of injesting more than a "pea-sized" amount of toothpaste is not only due to the fluoride, but also the other ingredients in the toothpaste that can be toxic when ingested. Be especially careful when using the Chinese made toothpaste you bought at the dollar store...they tend to use ethylene glycol(antifreeze) as a sweetener rather than propylene glycol. Fluoridated water only affects teeth that haven't FORMED yet.(It gets into the enamel matrix and makes it more dense, hence more resistant to plaque acids.) Flouridated water has NO effect on the teeth that are visible in your mouth. Fluoride MOUTHWASH has a topical effect to prevent cavities because it is much more concentrated than fluoridated water. I live in PA, and our lovely Governor, "Fast Eddie" Rendell signed a law requiring communities of more than 500 households to have the water supply fluoridated. If anything, this will only serve to be a huge economic burden on many communities. Fluoride vitamins come in bottles of 180 tablets or less. That way, even if a child accidentally eats the whole bottle, it is less than the toxic dose. BTW, if your child accidentally injests too much fluoride, give them milk. The fluoride will bind to the calcium.

hmmm - sounds like you didn't get up ‘Down East’ and ‘Mid Coast”?

You didn't mention steamers, mussels and lobster - or fiddleheads? ;o)

Best place for lobster in the world, pulled straight out of the ocean and steamed in old brick ovens - then eaten out over the water -

hmmm - I think I just decided what I'm going to have for lunch tomorrow

I attended the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine and have been a practicing dental hygienist for the past 22 years.
I’ve also noticed that many people around here who have well water have stained teeth due to the high iron content. Oh yeah...iron is a poison too, if you injest too much of it.

I graduate of the University of Pennsylvania SDM in 1978 (DMD). Very few posters on this site understand the chemical influence that fl- has on tooth structure. Most also do not understand dosage and because of this, fear is easily instill in them. Therefore I never go very deeply into the science of the topic and have found that most of the anti post are weak. As a dentist I believe we have a responsibility to hallmark the truth about fl-.
