The Obama camp seems to be opposing McCain on this.

It is a great idea. McCain is Statesman. Obama screwed up by not going too. He is placed in the position of not following not leading.

John McCain’s Remarks on the Economic Crisis
New York, NY
Wednesday, September 24, 2008

America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen.

Last Friday, I laid out my proposal and I have since discussed my priorities and concerns with the bill the Administration has put forward. Senator Obama has expressed his priorities and concerns. This morning, I met with a group of economic advisers to talk about the proposal on the table and the steps that we should take going forward. I have also spoken with members of Congress to hear their perspective.

It has become clear that no consensus has developed to support the Administration’s proposal. I do not believe that the plan on the table will pass as it currently stands, and we are running out of time.

Tomorrow morning, I will suspend my campaign and return to Washington after speaking at the Clinton Global Initiative. I have spoken to Senator Obama and informed him of my decision and have asked him to join me.

I am calling on the President to convene a meeting with the leadership from both houses of Congress, including Senator Obama and myself. It is time for both parties to come together to solve this problem.

We must meet as Americans, not as Democrats or Republicans, and we must meet until this crisis is resolved. I am directing my campaign to work with the Obama campaign and the commission on presidential debates to delay Friday night’s debate until we have taken action to address this crisis.

I am confident that before the markets open on Monday we can achieve consensus on legislation that will stabilize our financial markets, protect taxpayers and homeowners, and earn the confidence of the American people. All we must do to achieve this is temporarily set politics aside, and I am committed to doing so.

Following September 11th, our national leaders came together at a time of crisis. We must show that kind of patriotism now. Americans across our country lament the fact that partisan divisions in Washington have prevented us from addressing our national challenges. Now is our chance to come together to prove that Washington is once again capable of leading this country.

PALIN SHOULD FILL IN FOR MCCAIN AT THE DEBATE
Me ^ | September 24, 2008 | Cindy

Palin is the potential vice-president for McCain.

Palin should fill in for McCain at the debate; while McCain works on the economic issues.

Yeah because Obama has been studying for 2 weeks for this debate and he doesn’t want to have to start over again.

He doesn’t believe anything, it’s all spoon fed to him.

Empty suite alert

Barry The Clueless One isn’t coming because he would be outshone by John McCain, because it is Barry the empty vessel, vs John McCain, the solid leader in a crisis...

The biggest financial crisis in the country in over 75 years and Obama can’t suspend the campaign for a couple of days in order to pass legislation to save the country? If McCain sticks to his guns and comes up with some good commercials to blast Obama....Well,then, this could be his best move yet.

I agree with Lady GOP.

This is serious, this is a country-first move on Sen. McCain's part (he IS a sitting Senator after all) and besides, this move is in keeping with his maverick reputation...he apparently does what he believes is right, regardless of whether the pundits or congress critters agree.

Good for John. I am respecting you more and more (even tho I hate for you to miss a chance to clean bammies clock in a debate! )

I think it's a good move - particularly with the sound bite Obama has handed the McCain camp now - the old "call me if I'm needed" statement. Truth he, it will become clear to all that he wasn't needed.

The plan will be worked out and passed by Thursday night or Friday morning, then McCain will be on a plane to participate in the debate. Expectations will be lowered for his performance because everyone will know that he didn't have the same amount of time to prepare. And when he mops the floor with Obama, he'll appear like a superman for being able to pull it ALL off in the same week.

McCain goes there to try to solve the problem, and lets Obama twist in the wind. (figuratively of course) Then there's the debate on Friday. Can't it wait?

Not. Why isn’t he shouting from the rooftops about the Democrats tremendous culpability in all this? That is what his role as a partisan campaigner for the presidency is.

It’s not to be in Washington crafting “bipartisan solutions” to a problem he didn’t create let alone tried to prevent.

I mean fire Chris Cox, hire Andrew Cuomo? That’s what he can come up with?

And canceling the debate? Really freaking silly, IMO. Is Iraq and terrorism unimportant now because of the financial crisis?

I supported McCain in the primaries but I really wish Romney was in there right now.

I think Romney would be trailing Obama by 10-15 but he would blast away at Obama and the Democrats about Fannie and Freddie and might even take the lead. McCain is McCain to a freaking fault.
