next to The Spirit of America (82-1066)

How do B-2s have "tail" numbers? :-)

Thanks for the ping. Seeing the photo of the Buff on this thread reminds me of my younger years seeing those fly overhead in my hometown.

It's a generic term...Spirit of Alaska's is 90-0040. Or, in Air Force aircraft maintenance lingo, "Balls-40." I had the honor to see the first 8 operational aircraft being delivered to Whiteman between 1993 and 1995. I also happened to be at Whiteman on leave the day Alaska was delivered in July 1996.

And, I hate to say, I was not surprised when I was told Spirit of Kansas (89-0127) was the one that crashed in Guam.

88-0329 / WM (cn 1008/AV-8) The "Spirit of Missouri" makes an appearance at the Great Georgia Airshow 2007. This was the first operational B-2 delivered to the US Air Force.

Glad to see they finally took care of the pesky hydraulic leaks this jet had back in 1993 to 1995.

It is comforting to a American civilian in a dangerous world that a lot of damn fine other Americans have our back....

While I really like the B-2 the sight of a B-52 still makes my heart rate go up. They are beautiful aircraft.

See how the B-52 wheels are aligned with the runway and the body of the plane isn't? I think that ability of the plane was secret at one time.

I also noticed that one wing outrigger wheel is on the ground...

Thanks for pointing that out. I thought it was just a weird camera angle or something.

I remember waking up to the B-52's and their engine run-ups while stationed at K.I. Sawyer AFB, in Michigan.

“And, I hate to say, I was not surprised when I was told Spirit of Kansas (89-0127) was the one that crashed in Guam.”

Why is that? Did it have a history of problems?

Yes, we had a lot of issues with that jet when it first arrived.

There was moisture in a couple of sensors that had just been calibrated that then gave false readings to a flight computer.
They now heat the sensors to get rid of the moisture before calibration.
