Folding@Home - Turning Up the Speed!
Departments of Chemistry and of Structural Biology, Stanford University ^ | August 4, 2008 | Dr Vijay Pande

Posted on 08/17/2008 9:23:54 AM PDT by texas booster

With the 6.20 (classic & GPU) and 6.22 (SMP) clients out, we (Dr. Pande and the F@H team) can start looking forward to the next steps in client development. We still have some last bits of work to completely unify the clients, but the hard part is already completed there for the most part.

The 6.2x series introduces several new features for donors, but in time, the clients have been getting gradually more and more complex to use. The Win/SMP and multi-gpu setups are examples of very challenging setups. Our primary plans for the future are to make setup much easier, especially for the very challenging clients (Win/SMP, multi-gpu). Our dream client install would be a single installer that would install either the classic, SMP, or GPU client based on donor choices during the install process, and the installer would take care of complex install situations (such as multi-gpu).

It may take a while to get to a client installer like that. In the mean time, we are looking to improve our installation instructions to make the process easier with existing clients.

We have spent a lot of effort developing these new clients and putting all of our effort into getting them to run well (the GPU2 client/core has gotten a great deal of effort, which has paid off in the transition from GPU1 to GPU2). It's now time to concentrate on usability and ease of installation.

Our hope is that with this completed, we will have a very advanced set of clients, but with very easy installation. That's easier said than done, but that's where we're headed.

With the 6.20 (classic & GPU) and 6.22 (SMP) clients out...

I'm still using 5.03, is the 6.20 much faster?

I’ve been racking up with the new nVidia chipset client.

They’re also starting to support other GPU’s now.

I can kick it up a notch on my second machine as soon as they add a client that isn’t so bloody confusing. Right now I’m just running the basic one so SOMETHING gets done, but it’s capable of a lot more.

NVidia video cards sorted by points per $$.

Lets face it - 4000 points per day from an $80 video card ... wow.

Any of these cards blow my older ATI away. It may be time for an upgrade.

Newegg has an slower 8800GS on sale today for $99 with a $30 rebate.

I would prefer the faster 8800GS clocked at 680 Mhz, but for bang per buck this will surely do.

At one time Harvard included a detailed version with a dry-as-sawdust narrator. It might still be there.

It is amazing how much you can learn from folding. It certainly keeps you abreast of all the developments in the medical field concerning protein misfolding.

The new 6.20 client - you are using the GUI version, the one that leaves a red flower in the system tray - is certainly faster than the 5.03 client.

However, since it is in beta, you will need to keep an eye on it so that it doesn't lock up, go into an infinite loop or have the beta time period expire.

I have about 50 systems that run F@H, scattered all over Texas. I only run the 5.04 console version of F@H, since I don't visit most of these folks but once a year or so.

I did install 6.11 on my main system and, except for the expiration this past Aug 2, it has run fine. Still, its only on my every day system.

That's one reason why I had to start a new thread. Many of our folders forget about the folding, and the betas expire, or they don't reinstall when upgrading to a new computer at the start of school.

What is your folding user name?

Are you folding for 36120?

Tell me more!

What type of systems are you running?

Have you upgraded to a more recent folding client?

What kind of systems do you have, and which OS?

You will need one CPU core free per GPU, and about 512 MB of RAM.

All else is manageable.

891 of my 1336 WUs came from my PS3 Sony Play Station.

Many algorithms for the GPU came from the work on the PS3, and visa versa.

The points values for either type of folding are tremendous.

Of course, this specialized folding does not provide all of the information needed to solve certain problems, so good old fashioned general purpose CPU folding is also needed for th research.

I found that HArvard has a whole bunch of interesting web-pages that, while not directly involved in Folding, are all worth checking out.

Look around, there's a lot out there. Enjoy!

I shut mine down a couple months ago. The power consumption was killing my budget.

I did my share..."madaniels2". I just had to give it up.

Guys -- be aware -- verify that your Power Supply will handle the added load, or you will find out that Lucas Electrics isn't the only company that relies on keeping the smoke in the circuits to maintain operation.       ;^)

Your power rate/kwh must be a lot higher than here; however, I will run mine with solar power that is surplus except during blackouts. Even in the dead of winter there will be enough power to run 40 laptops lol
