I’ve got another question for you. I’ve got an Intel C2D processor and it looks like F@H is only using one core (CPU never goes above 50% for F@H.) Is there a way to make it use both cores?
Thanks.

Yes but you must use the console version.

Create a folder for F@H 2. Copy the F@H 6.22 version into this new folder.

When installing the console you will get to choose various options. See here:

http://folding.stanford.edu/English/WinUNIGuide#ntoc2

Select Advanced Options when the choice comes up. After the Advanced Options section you will have a chance to set the Machine ID. Make sure that it is different from any other F@H on the system, console, GUI or GPU. Usually ID 2 or ID 3 is open.

Make sure that you spell your F@H name correctly and use Team 36120.

It will download and start folding for you. Check the Task Manager and you should see 100% now.

So running one console version of F@H will utilize both cores? Or do I need to run two instances of F@H?

I got it. I have one console version and one gui version running. Can I run two console versions as services instead?

You need to run two instances of F@H, each in its own folder.

Make sure that you Machine ID matches up to each folder.

On a dual core chip it is best to run two console versions, one in F@H 1 and one in F@H 2.

The F@H GUI can only run on one core, and only one instance per system. I use it for systems where I might need to easily pause the folding. Its easy setup also makes it great for new users.

Plus new users have a great visual method to see what is happening to the protein.

Right now I am getting ~4600ppd from my OC’d 8800GTS 640MB.
I got more points in 2 weeks than the previous 1.5 years from my older comp. w/ AMD Athlon 3200+ that was folding 24/7.

I really hate to post to “all” but I need help on a specific WU. I've been having some issues with my new POS Gateway. I got it back from being serviced under warranty a few days ago, and the assigned WUs were crunching in a few hours. My 24 hour point average was crawling back up; life was good. Well, last night both cores wound up with Project 5113, and it looks like it may take each 30+ hours to complete!

I would like to know if this is normal for this project, or is my computer screwed. Both cores are running at 100%, and the Task Manager shows no other processes taking up any significant resources. I searched the F@H and Extreme Overclockers forums and did not see any posts regarding this specific unit taking significantly more time to process than others......Thanks, Colin

The 5000 series of proteins are certainly larger, and may introduce a longer complete time.

Make sure that you are using CPU core 6.20b. It has been very stable on my systems for weeks now.

The biggest factor in CPU folding is the size of the on chip memory. The newest Intel dual core chips will have 6 or 8 megs of memory on the main die. I don't buy low cost dual cores since they don't run F@H as well.

I think that you get a bonus for 51xx cores, since they are so complicated. Like you I haven't seen a breakout of values for that core.

Egon, any data from your monitor on 5113?

Not other than it's 749 points. In fact I'm not seeing any stats. I'll have to check out what's going on.

I'm in the process of rewriting the tool to a more flexible platform (RubyOnRails). I'm hoping to be done with the conversion in a couple of weeks.

According to our history, no tracked machine has been assigned that project yet.

5113 is just a monster to process. My dual core (3.0GHz) has been getting these. It’ll take anywhere from 3-5 days to crunch....C

It is normally a simple case of downloading the F@H GUI CPU version 6.20 and letting it fold 24/7. That is how I started years ago.

If you have a dual core system or a new ATI or NVidia card, then a new world opens up to add newer and faster folding programs. A PlayStation 3 can even be used to run this simulation.

At the end of the day, your computers can be used to run screensavers or to benefit medical research.

I am getting older, and opted to advance research that will one day benefit myself and my family.
