The 49th State - The Last Frontier
by proud_yank

Having recently moved here, I thought an Alaskan Singles Thread would be pretty fun.

Alaska is the largest state in America, roughly twice the size of Texas (sorry Texas!).

Putting Alaska into perspective. The Aleutian Islands over California, and South-eastern Alaska over Georgia.

An interesting fact I learned the other day is that in addition to being the Western and Northern-most state, Alaska is also the Eastern-most state too. The Western tip of the Aleutian Islands is just West of the International Dateline.

Alaska can be separated into five regions. The Far North (Also known as the 'North Slope') extends from the Brooks Range (the Northern-most extension of the Rocky Mountains) to the Arctic Ocean. Here are some photos of the Brooks Range, and the North Slope region. Barrow is the most Northern city in America. For fun, here is Barrow's weather.

Most people in Alaska live in Southcentral Alaska (Anchorage), and then the Interior (Fairbanks). Temperatures in the interior are sometimes colder than in the Arctic. Western Alaska is famous for the finish of the Iditarod dog-sled race in Nome. Southeastern, and the Interior, are famous for the Klondike gold rush.

Juneau, the state capitol is located in Southeastern Alaska. As a staunch conservative, it makes me smile that the govt. is located somewhere that can only be reached by boat or plane :-).

The Regions of Alaska

There are lots of moose here, and you really have to be careful driving. In the winter moose will come down from the mountains, and casually stroll through downtown Anchorage. We had one right outside the front door of our main office today! Other animals here include caribou, grizzly, polar, and black bears, muskoxen, beaver, otters, wolves, wolverines, tons of birds, and lots of delicious fish!

Some other interesting info about Alaska....

At 20,320 ft., Alaska has North America's highest peak, Denali.
State bird - Willow Ptarmigan.
State fish - King Salmon.
State tree - Sitka Spruce.
State spore - Dog mushing.
State animal - Moose.
State flower - Wild Native Forget-me-Not.
State song - 'Alaska's Flag'.

Eight stars of gold on a field of blue -
Alaska's flag. May it mean to you
The blue of the sea, the evening sky,
The mountain lakes, and the flow'rs nearby;
The gold of the early sourdough's dreams,
The precious gold of the hills and streams;
The brilliant stars in the northern sky,
The "Bear" - the "Dipper" - and, shining high,
The great North Star with its steady light,
Over land and sea a beacon bright.
Alaska's flag - to Alaskans dear,
The simple flag of a last frontier.

Here are some of my photos that I've put online so far

About the 25 year old co-worker, I think you did the right thing. At least you let him know there is a better way than to just go get stone drunk and lay some chick for a one night stand. Anyways, a one night stand can come back and bite him in the butt, in that case, either he will be forced to "grow up" or run away, unfortunatly, I've seen a lot of the latter. Unfortunatly, it is part of our "I want it in 30 minutes" society. Stay the course, man, maybe it will rub off on him, we can always hope.

BTW, I did score an old CD player, a GE model 3-7000A that was made in May of 1984. I was over my friends condo and at the dumpster, it was sitting beside the dumpster in the drizzling rain. I took it home, fired it up, the only thing os that it doesn't slide out the carriage for the CD to eject it. I took the top off and helped it to eject, it worked and I put a CD in it and it played. I used the headphone jack to listen to it. All it needs is a belt and the rack might need lubed and it should be good to go. It is meant for a component stereo system, it was made when CD players costed around $1000 or so.

Well..TODAY, at work this kid made SURE I knew all about his escapades this weekend. He did go out and get drunk, he did find a woman (20 Y.O.), he did have intercourse several times and is planning for more.

But he could NOT leave things at that!!

(The following is NOT meant to be derogatory in any way to women, I am paraphrasing what was discussed between this guy and another coworker. I will make it as DECENT as possible, while trying to show what was said.)

He and Chuck began talking about women in general, and this led to some VERY crude talk , in particular about "the hygiene of the female genitalia", If you get my drift. It went back and forth for a few seconds, then they stopped talking. I just responded with the same type of thing I had on Friday. ::

"I Will just repeat that I hope you finally start to grow up soon, and realize that women exist for more than your sexual pleasure for a night or two, and instead for something more lasting and meaningful."

However..he responded that he was gong to "see her again, and it looked to be something more than just a night or two(but he reminded me that the had already "done it" several times, and was planning for more.")

This is the kind of thing I have to put up with on a regular occasion from him and another younger tech there. To them. I am the WEIRD ONE, for wanting a woman as a companion and as a friend, instead of as a "conquest".

And women think I am a Neanderthal.

A decent woman will not think of you as a Neanderthal but a sweet guy who sees them as a member of the human race and not just a notch on the bed post.

You did the right thing and deep down they know they are out of order but they are just behaving and copying the crowd. Peer pressure and IMHO it is getting worse with each generation from how you behave to how you dress and what presents parents have to provide to stop their kids being ostracized.

I wonder whether the guy is just saying this stuff to get a reaction from you. I'd be tempted to ignore him to see whether he tones it down when he realizes that it won't get a rise from you.

If you keep making references to being a Neanderthal, Max may chase you back to your cave and beat you with your own club.

Okay.

Seriously. I agree with Bill. I think they're trying to get under your skin, for fun. I bet they're even making half the stuff up too just to see how you'd react.

Just ignore them, Jack.

Don't let them get to you. That's their goal.

The impossible has happened.

I figured that cold fusion would be harnessed before this happened.

Or at least room temperature(or even higher) superconductivity would become commonplace before this.

Or maybe cheap, reliable fuel-cells would be developed for automobiles and even homes.

But no.

I am glad that a couple of the real Neanderthal sharks that attacked me in the past have left this thread.(or been banned.) What I am about to say would SURELY get them going.

Anyway....

A woman has shown interest in me on Yahoo personals.

Someone not too far away.

Someone that seems to have a lot in common with me.

Someone that sounds like has good morals.

Someone that appears to be attractive.

Someone who thinks I am handsome.(ME handsome??)

Someone that wants to start a friendship!!

I haven't told ANYONE else about this yet. Not even my sis or mom!!

You guys are the FIRST to know!!

Now, she IS a bit older than me (45, I am 39, will not be 40 till Oct.), and has kids. but, at least maybe we could have some meaningful friendship together.

I wish I could share your enthusiasm. But I can't.

It has been SO long since I had any kind of meaningful relationship with a woman. Not too mention that except for Kim over 20 years ago, ALL of the others were frauds. All of them were just "in it for them" and each one left me a bit more damaged, until Holly nearly 4 years ago. I have not allowed anything remotely approcahing a friendship with a woman since, out of fear.

Not too mention that it has been over 15 years since I was on any date of any kind. And that one was a fraud, and the girl told everyone how she imagined herself with another guy the whole time we were together.

P, that was the summer of 1991. I was 24. You were still in grade school then. It has been THAT long!!

I just tried to suppress any need for that kind of stuff since that time, since every time ended in disaster. I figured I was destined to be alone for life, unless I would "lower my standards and go along with the new morality" including intercourse nearly immediately in a relationship. Since that was NOT going to happen--I figured I would always be alone.

Deep down inside, I still do feel that way. I still figure my chance got away over 20 years ago. I still think it is too late.

But that does NOT mean that I am going to let this opportunity pass without at least ATTEMPTING to form some kind of friendship. It is just that I am more fearful of taking the "next step here" than I think I would be trying to disarm a nuke that was about to go off in 15 minutes. At least I think I have a BIT of an idea on how to proceed there(after all, I deal with high voltage ckts. and pulse ckts. on daily basis). --Here, I am totally "in the dark".

I fear that I will say the wrong thing--or not say enough--and that will be that. I really fear that I will be WAY too much of a bore and nerd to be able to pique the interest of this woman. She wants to know more about me. And wants to try and develop some kind of friendship. I am not really sure how to respond, without sounding too nerdy--and ABOVE ALL--I do NOT want to come across as desperate(which I am not) and sound such. I don't need another threat like that from Holly. And, so here I am.
