It's called "AreWeThereYetitis." Americans are people of very, very little patience. They want it now!

You expected something different from the 2004 elections?

The 2002 elections?

The 2000 elections?

Keep in mind, many of these calls are being based on exit polls rather than actual results, and we all know how reliable those are.

Calling races where an incumbent is running unopposed or the challenger is extremely weak (all polls showing one party up by over 25%) is possible, and probaly true even without returns. I do see it as very bad form though.

It's usually not difficult to call some races fairly early.

We now have to watch Arlington County VA to see if Allen can squeeze enough votes out to win.

Old habits die hard. They shouldn't call races while any polls are open in CONUS

Exit polls combined with historical voting patterns.

In 2000 I was hoping Bush would take Michigan. I watched the MI Sec of State site as precinct after precinct reported in and Bush was leading big time, but everybody was calling Michigan for Gore. Then finally, in the middle of the night, Wayne county (Detroit) reported in, and all of the sudden Bush was beaten by several tens of thousands of votes.

If a Republican Candidate doesn't have a substantial lead before the big cities report, then they're usually toast. So you can see a real close race, or even the Republican leading, but when the big dump of votes from the city arrives, it's all over.

No idea... NBC has called

PA with 0% reporting (less than 1000 votes counted)
NJ with 1% reporting (and Kean a lead)
MD with 1% reporting (and a 1,000 vote lead by Steele)
MD Gov with 1% reporting (and 1000+ vote lead by Erlich)
and now Chaffee loss with 1% reporting there.

Olbermen admited that they use a "complex formula" that uses exit polls as a component to call the races.

Their 'exit' poll for PA for example shoed 70/30 for casey... thats how they called it with a total of 900 votes cast at 8:22pm EST (polls closed at 8pm)

Because they have dead air to fill and are desperate to influence voters even on election day.

Fear not, the Dems will control the Congress at the end of the day. The GOP revolution is over, a unified gov't squandered. Looks like Bush will have done as much for the GOP as Clinton did for the Rats, that is caused them to wander the wilderness.

Will Bush find his balls and veto pen now? It's all over but the shouting, look to 2008. And, more importantly, PRAY for our troops in Iraq and PRAY for the freedom loving Iraqi people who will be left high-and-dry because of an shameful, wussified American electorate.

I want Chafee to lose hard. And I want Steele to win.

That's about all I care about. Purge the party of traitors, and get a black Senator with an actual record.
