Looking for Information about Televisions. Time to replace my TV.

Time to replace my 14 inch Sony 25 year old television on a rolling cart (with one caster missing) with something more sophisticated. I thought of doing this last year but I was so intimidated by the sales people and the choices that it was very sad... and we have had another year with the TV-wonder (ya wonder what they are saying because the sounds is so wavery)

Please post your opinions and remember this is a non tech person.

Many years ago I had saved 4000 to purchase a good sound system and in the late seventies one could get a decent system for that money. I went into stereo stores where thin young men spoke in gibberish about watts and other things that meant nothing to me. I could not understand what went with what. After two years of trying to figure it out one day I was walking through Sears and saw a little gaget. It had a turntable on top under a plastic cover, a radio and a 8 trac player on the side and two little speakers. It cost $80. I understood it although I was never satisfied with the quality of the sound.

I later married someone with the multi thousand dollar sound system, but it wasnt part of the settlement.

I need something simple to use and own that delivers quality in tv land for about 1100-2000. (haveing a scad of children has cut back my discretionay income)

Freeps?

I will catch up with this thread in the am.

Since the last TV lasted 25 years you need to go all out and get one of those huge wall mount plasma TVs. You will be the envy of your neighborhood!

I think I am the only person in the area without a fancy television. Our family is famous for its lousy tv and best sledding hill.

Allot of variables have to be considered any more:

Are you rural or city? cable, satellite, or antenna?

The high-end, if you can get good antenna signal or cable/satellite, would be plasma. They are big screens. And they are high end energy consumers.

Mid level would be LCD TV. Basically, you would have similar requirements to the plasma (above), but the LCDs cost much less.

If you aren't interested in those, you could go with a newer model tube TV. Keep in mind, however, that most tubes are analog tuner, rather than digital, and analog is to be phased out within the next couple of years. (IIRC, McCain's bill places the phase-out by 2009.) The analog/pheasant probably would not affect cable/satellite recipients for a while, but it would impact antenna clients. Most TV broadcast stations are already converting from analog to digital.

we just bought a flat screen LCD

The tech guy said NEVER buy a plasma, because if it breaks, it can't be fixed.

LCD seems to be the best way to go for the money.

A few years back, my 28in Fisher TV started to give up the ghost. I went to a TV/electronics repair shop. They had a real nice 31in Magnavox there the guy only wanted 100 bux for. Since electronics was his business, I asked what if it dies? He said if it dies in 6 months, bring it back and we'll do something else.

Works as good now as it did two years ago, so I'm happy.

Some additional information would be helpful.

How will you use the new TV and where? Family room, bedroom?

Do you currently have cable TV service or standard over-the-air broadcast?

In the meantime I'll pass on some additional things to consider.

1) The impact of HDTV (High Definition TV). Even if your not interested in HDTV, you will be impacted by it within the next few years. At some point (could be 3-10 years) all over the air broadcasts will go to HDTV. If you have a standard TV receiver you won't get any broadcast without a HDTV tuner. Even if you have standard cable service now, they may push you to HDTV/digital broadcast in the future.

2) That being said above, I would still purchase as standard broadcast LCD or DLP TV. (You'll need to learn about the difference) They will continue to work fine with DVD players and external tuners if necessary. With the hundreds of MILLIONS of TV's in households today, it's not likely they will be gone over the next 15-20 years.

3) Suggest you avoid Plasma TV - very expensive compared to other options.

You can get a decent LCD projector for that money.

There are some great buys in other TVs for that money at Costco, Sams or Best Buy.

Some sets will last years, others die a sudden death.

I had an Bosche brand 19" (got it from a guy who owed me $$$, he was moving, didn't have cash). It was still running after 15 years and I left it when I moved to another state.

After the move, I bought a rather expensive Philips 19". It lasted 2 years and died. Repair place said it would cost more to repair it than a new one would cost. I replaced it with a cheap Orion 19", which is still running after 6 years.
