Love with a Neanderthal? It could have happened
Fort Wayne News-Sentinel ^ | Thursday, August 3, 2006 | Faye Flam

The question of sex with Neanderthals speaks to our understanding of ourselves, our origins and our uniqueness. If this other type of human being wasn't like us, what was he like? As I started researching this issue, I found myself staring at a picture of a nude Neanderthal man - a forensic sculpture created by Duke University paleoanthropologist Steve Churchill that was published last year in the journal Science. The model, based on a skeleton found at La Ferrassie in France, is mesmerizing in its combination of familiarity and alienness. To be honest, he's really not half bad looking. I can't say for certain I wouldn't sleep with him. He's got a good, muscular body, and while he's nobody's idea of handsome, that could be forgiven if he had a nice personality or I was starving and he offered to throw some rhino steaks on the fire for me.

"This comment, which I think is naive"

Yes, but what strikes me is that a woman would write so openly about whom she would fornicate with. "Oh, yes, I'm a slut, so I might behave immorally with him."

"Seduction is for sissies..."

Really? I bet early man spent several months wages trying to land a hot one...

...or am I supposed to believe these girls just dug rocks like these up?

That was the rule: at least one month's-worth of mammoth steaks for the best hunk of stream-tumbled gravel it would buy.

he's Scots by birth and I'm Scots by Y-chromosome...hmmmm.

I suspect that if there is any N-DNA in us, it won't be the Y chromosome. If there was a really, really ugly subspecies of human around I doubt a woman could overcome the "ick factor" (and pass on Neanderthal male chromosomes to her children). Men are different though. Most of us know horny guys who'll go after anything that remotely looks female. Consider the bestiality factor, it's usually male perverts who are arrested for sex with animals.

Any off-spring of those "2 am" trysts would then have human paternal-chromosomes and Neanderthal maternal chromosomes My advice to molecular biologists in search of that possibility would be to study the maternal DNA for Neanderthal genes.

LOL Kennewick man looked okay.

Kennewick man was human. By the time he died 9,000 years ago all the other homo sub species were gone. The only controversy surrounding him was whether or not he was an Indian ancestor or of some other European or Asian stock.

Could be--I grew up in the north, and mum always made sure my hat with earflaps was on quite snugly in the winter.

Hmm. And I've always thought ladies with red hair and light skin were very beautiful.

You aren't the only one. ;-)

Seeing some of the women that drunk sailors (particularly those that have been at sea for a month or so) have picked up, the Neanderthal woman in the Smithsonian in Washington didn't look too bad in comparison, particularly if it was a cold night. Just my unstudied comment.
