NEW DELHI - India's largest automobile manufacturer, Tata Motors Ltd., said Thursday it plans to set up a plant in the communist-ruled West Bengal state to manufacture a family car that will cost little more than $2,000.

The plant will be set up with an investment of 10 billion rupees ($220 million), and is expected to start production in two years, said Ratan Tata, the company's chairman.

A prototype of the five-seater model to be manufactured at the West Bengal plant is undergoing tests at a Tata facility in the western Indian city of Pune, Tata said.

I've never paid for Tatas.

A prototype of the five-seater model to be manufactured at the West Bengal plantis undergoing tests at a Tata facility in the western Indian city of Pune.

The Tata Group is one of India's largest and most respected business conglomerates, with revenues in 2004-05 of $17.8 billion (Rs 799,118 million), the equivalent of about 2.8 per cent of the country's GDP. Tata companies together employ some 215,000 people. The Group's 32 publicly listed enterprises — among them standout names such as Tata Steel, Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Motors and Tata Tea — have a combined market capitalisation that is the highest among Indian business houses in the private sector, and a shareholder base of over 2 million. The Tata Group has operations in more than 40 countries across six continents, and its companies export products and services to 140 nations.

Now go back and re-read the article once again:

" Tata Motors Ltd., said Thursday it plans to set up a plant in the communist-ruled West Bengal state "

The article says West Bengal is the communist-ruled state.......... not Pune.

Communist-dominated districts of India

Communist as in the Communist Party of India. Barring the symbols and name, they don't have much else in common with the more familiar communists- the Soviets and the Chinese.

Indian "Communists" have to fight elections at the end of every year...and this particular government was voted into power only two weeks ago- voted by the people of West Bengal.
