First DNA link possible in lacrosse case

DURHAM -- Tissue found under the fingernail of an exotic dancer who claimed she was raped at a Duke University lacrosse party may match a player who was there, several well-placed sources said Wednesday.

Analyzing the tissue, scientists concluded it came from the same genetic pool and was "consistent" with the bodily makeup of one of 46 lacrosse players who gave DNA samples for testing, the sources said.

At the same time, scientists ruled out a possible match with any of the other 45 students, according to the sources.

If accurate, the fingernail tissue match would offer the first DNA evidence potentially linking the dancer and an alleged attacker.

But because a complete DNA pattern was not obtained from the tissue, it was not possible to match it with the nearly 100 percent certainty that DNA results usually offer, the sources added.

The dancer told police she clawed at three attackers as they raped and sodomized her for 30 minutes during the March 13-14 lacrosse house party at 610 N. Buchanan Blvd.

Bare torso shots and DNA were taken the same day - 3/23.

10 days later. A division one lacrosse player is guaranteed to have scratches/burises on him. Lacrosse is a contact sport.

Gottlieb is also the investigator who was asking reporters about the photos (to identify who was at the party).

CAROLYN COSTELLO, WNCN REPORTER: Well Sergeant Gottlieb called me, I had never spoken to him before, certainly not during this investigation. He said he had some questions he wanted to ask me about the photos that we aired exclusively on NBC.

WARNING DISGUSTING SINUS/MUCOUS THEORY: I assume the nail was found in the trashcan. DNA from guys could be spread everywhere in that bathroom. When I went to school, guys didn't even use a tissue to blow their noses (not me). They would just expel material. I could imagine guys just aiming at the can. In my dorm, they would just do it at the sink, in the shower etc. In the shower, with hot water, it could be aerated, and "depossited" all over the place. It wasn't the Waldorf...

I didn't see FNX, but if it's Micheal Baden.. he'll fires from the hip and usually goes by what he reads in the papers.

*** If there was TISSUES under the Nail from scratching, the SBI would have found it and we wouldn't be waiting all this Time. I think it's a reasonable bet that this was trace DNA - it didn't even have enough genetic markers to rise to the level of a match. There is some interpretation here,,, someone if "filling" in the missing genetic markers and then saying it's CONSISTENT. This is risky business. This will be problematic in court. Especially when a mixture of DNA is present, filling in the missing sequences can bring errors.

Look for lazy Michael Baden to testify in Court for Nifong. He also testified on behalf of O.J.'s team. Baden is a liberal.

Gotta get back to work.

Two of my boys play lacrosse. While they are usually bruised (the younger one looks like a leopard during the season)they would usually not have scratches. Players wear gloves and pads everywhere but legs, forearms, and neck. I can imagine scratches on those areas from turf but I don't see how a woman's press on nail scratches would look the same or be on the same parts of the body as lacrosse scratches. Let's hope none of these guys have a "scratcher" girlfriend.

That could account for the DNA, absolutely.. There's 250 different ways that DNA could be on there - including a handshake.

You would think that if these guys were guilty that every cm of that bathroom would have been scrubbed.

All they would have had to do was to spit in the trash can and hit the nails. Voila'! Small traces of DNA.

I have three sons 29, 25 and 15. To this day none of them can aim straight for the toilet. God forbid, they never, ever take a tissue and wipe around the rim or the floor. They are representative of 99.9% of the male population.

BTW, all 3 of them say "Not Me!" LOL!

I don't think this is SOP at all. The decision to detain or charge the Cab driver comes right from the DA's office.

Basically, with this strong arm coersion, the DA looks like he may bring charges against everyone involved until they all support his version of events.

This is OUTRAGEOUS, out-of-control, prosecutorial MISCONDUCT.

The DA has a DUTY - A DUTY he swears to, to pursue the TRUTH. In no way can this be interpreted as business as ususal.

I think Nifong is a very vindictive, unscrupulous man. This makes sense now why Kerry Sutton (representing a player) was
making public statements supporting his reelection and wearing a Nifong T-shirt. She lives and works in that district. She was probably very aware of what would happen to her and her clients in future cases, if she crossed Nifong.

Didn't Nifong say, they don't want to go against me or try this case against me ...

Yeah, or the trashcan dumped maybe?

It never has added up, never has looked like a gang-rape beating, strangulation.

I called the Gov's office and emailed the Attorney General's office.

They are giving NC a bad name.

I think that's what we all need to do and write someone in the media too.

Thank you!

At least $800k.

You meant upper arms of course. The gloves go nearly to the elbow. My son gets bruised a lot too but he also occasionally gets scratched by the netting at the end of the stick scraping across his upper arm.

Nifong is trying to squeeze blood from a turnip. There was no rape!

I just found out I'll be spending most of July at Research Triangle Park.

Nifong's hillbilly antics have me a bit concerned about visiting your area.
