Breaking: Intel Based Macs to run Windows with "Boot Camp"..
Apple.com ^

Posted on 04/05/2006 7:02:22 AM PDT by ladyshealth

More and more people are buying and loving Macs. To make this choice simply irresistible, Apple will include technology in the next major release of Mac OS X, Leopard, that lets you install and run the Windows XP operating system on your Mac. Called Boot Camp (for now), you can download a public beta today.

As elegant as it gets Boot Camp lets you install Windows XP without moving your Mac data, though you will need to bring your own copy to the table, as Apple Computer does not sell or support Microsoft Windows.(1) Boot Camp will burn a CD of all the required drivers for Windows so you don't have to scrounge around the Internet looking for them.

Optional alt. At startup, hold down the option key (alt) to choose between Mac OS X and Windows. Run XP natively Once you’ve completed Boot Camp, simply hold down the option key at startup to choose between Mac OS X and Windows. (That’s the “alt” key for you longtime Windows users.) After starting up, your Mac runs Windows completely natively. Simply restart to come back to Mac.

What you’ll need Mac OS X Tiger v10.4.6 (check Software Update) The latest Firmware update (check Support Downloads) 10GB free hard disk space An Intel-based Mac A blank recordable CD A printer for the instructions (You’ll want to print them before installing Windows, really.) A bona fide installation disc for Microsoft Windows XP, Service Pack 2, Home or Professional (No multi-disc, upgrade or Media Center versions.) The Boot Camp course Boot Camp Public Beta provides a straightforward means of letting your Mac run Windows. Here’s how it works:

Space maker. Meet the most elegant hard drive utility ever. First, you need to make sure your Intel-based Mac has the latest version of Mac OS X and the latest firmware update. These provide technologies that make Boot Camp possible. It’s also wise to print out the Installation & Setup Guide. The Boot Camp burns a CD with the drivers Windows needs to recognize Mac-specific hardware. It is very important to do this before starting the Windows installation. The software also helps you set aside hard drive space for the Windows installation, without moving any of your Mac files around. Just drag the intuitive slider to choose the size that’s right for you. Boot Camp also helps you remove the Windows partition, should you so desire. Next, insert your Windows installation disc, restart and follow the Windows installation process. The only tricky part is selecting the C: drive manually. Be sure to get this right, or you could erase your Mac files accidentally. Remember, Apple Computer does not sell or support Microsoft Windows. After the installation process is complete and your Mac has booted Windows, you’ll need the Macintosh Drivers CD you burned previously. When you insert the CD, it will automatically install the drivers. Follow the instructions in the Installation & Setup Guide for helpful hints. Don’t forget to follow best practices for updating and protecting your Windows system (see “Word to the wise” to right). You’ll need Windows XP Home Edition or Professional, Service Pack 2 installation disc.

Oh, Dear GOD!

Windows is the PROBLEM, not the solution!

Well, if you have to do work at home, Windows is what you need.

Office for Mac is not 100% cross platform compatible. It's just easier to do it in windows....

For me, it is the best of both worlds..

Don't really think this is breaking news....

AAPL up 3.59 on this news.

I'd be happier, but in my experience, Apple hardware quality is going to hell in a handbasket. Between the product itself, and the snarky attitude I'm getting from Apple techs when trying to deal with it, I'm looking outside of Apple for the first time in a while!

Yes, Mac are pricey, but I expect they will become more competative in time. I have never owned a Mac (own an iPod) but I am now seriously thinking that my next computer will be a Mac. One of the strong allures, for me, is that a Mac is highly capable in the video editing area. I have stacks and stacks of video that needs to be edited and converted to DVD, and there simply is NO Windows based software that really can handle the task. Sure, there's a lot of PC video software out there, but it is by and large extremely buggy and not very effective. I end up spending hours and hours seeking work arounds, and waste tons of time. Nope, I think I just may get a Mac - especially if I'll also be able to play BF2!

This may spell trouble for Mac game developers - we shall see if gamers will value not rebooting at the cost of waiting longer for games to come out in Mac OS X versions. The big game porting houses are probably very worried this morning!

(Also, this post is an opportunity to refresh my tagline....)

I just can't deal with paying $2000 for something that I can get for $600. I do music editing and recording on a compaq without any hassles. 90% of my pc use is internet browsing and email. the other 10% is music related. i've had no troubles, and with the 1200 or so I saved, I can by a sweet 52 Fender Tele.

$2000?

Latest intel Mac mini: $599 (bring your own keyboard, mouse, and monitor, but it does have wireless networking, gigabit ethernet, bluetooth and P1394 (aka Firewire, aka iLink) built in.)

Latest iMac, 17 inch: $1299. Comes with a Core Duo processor, screen, keyboard, multi-button mouse, videocamera, etc. For $1699 you get a 20 inch version.

Discounts available on Macs, if you look at Amazon, at the very least.

I was wondering about that...been playing around with VMware player, and it's slick as a whistle. Would VMP support a Mac virtual machine?

If it does and it works half as well with Mac as it does with Windows, it'd be worth a try...

That would be great. Some folks have said an emulator, not a hypervisor, was required in the past (different HW, different SW). However, with Mac supporting Intel x86 - it just might be possible to run a Mac guest o/s.

$1699 plus sales tax comes out to 1800. That's way too much for a pc.

And here I bought my 486/66 for $3,000. $1,800 is not too much for a PC, depending on the market you're in. Sure it's too much if you're in the low-end el-cheapo bare bones market, but it's a good price in the mid range market depending on what you want in the package.

No way. I got everything I needed for under $900. DVD/CD writer, plenty of ports and slots, plenty of disk space, pentium 4. it does everything i need.
